Nashville alt/pop trio Nightly is gearing up for the release of their sophomore album wear your heart out, and it’s got us a little reflective. We featured their debut single “xo” back in 2016, and since then, we’ve been treated to a steady stream of singles, EP’s, performances and even some wholesome dog-adoption content. Frontman Jonny Capeci chatted with us on the new album, the band’s favorite Nashville artists and key collaborators, as well as a fun link between the band, Taylor Swift and Crema.
Be sure to catch their release party on August 25 at 7PM at Garage Vintage (727 Douglas Ave) in East Nashville! Then they wrap up a headline tour in Nashville at Brooklyn Bowl on November 16 with Knox and Abby Holiday opening up the show (you can enter to win tickets in our giveaway).
Who is your creative community in Nashville?
Primarily it’s the 3 of us in the band that write and create everything nightly related, but we have a couple of super talented friends in town that we work with frequently. A few of our favs are Andrew Stoelzing, Seth Ennis, Nate Miles, and Emily Falvey. The songwriting community here is second to none, and that’s probably the single biggest contributing factor to our growth as writers. Also want to shoutout our mgmt neon coast, specifically Nikki Boon, who is always supporting our ideas and helping us shape our creative vision. Lastly, Zach Pigg has really become our creative director for all things photo/video.
How did Nashville’s creatives, spaces and culture play into your latest project?
The entire album was made here and with people from Nashville. We work primarily in Donelson on the music/recording and not in some of the more common writers rooms or studios, so a lot of the time it feels like we’re running our own little secret operation. I live downtown and wrote 80% of the lyrics there so I feel like the city has been my backdrop for a lot of my writing. There are so many talented writers and musicians around every corner, so it’s very inspiring. I hope we make the city proud.
I’m always interested in peoples routines and writing processes. Specifically what things they’ve learned that have changed their perspective or process. For me, a big thing has been learning to stop over editing myself while writing and try to always maintain that flow state. Things can always be changed or edited later, but it’s important to just get the idea out when it arrives and not throttle it by overanalyzing too early.
What does the city of Nashville (or Nashville as a concept) mean to you?
To us, coming to Nashville was like Disney World for people who love music. It’s so embedded in the culture of this city. Especially coming from a city where full-time musicians are hard to find. It’s so rich in music history which is something I love to nerd out on. Just being here is so inspiring and pushed us to continually better ourselves.
What’s a Nashville-related story you’ve always wanted to share?
I once saw Taylor Swift at Crema. Been going back ever since.
Hit play on Nightly’s mix of their favorite Nashville artists like The Wldlfe, Abby Holiday, Knox, The Band CAMINO and more!
