It’s been 15 years since lauded singer and actor Janelle Monáe first introduced herself to the world with conceptual, genre-bending debut EP Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), which she followed up in 2010 with one of the strongest debuts in modern R&B history with The ArchAndroid. A critically adored, highly awarded, and beloved icon of music, art, fashion, and screen, Monáe has wowed us time and time again with music and her artsy and inspired live show in the years since, most recently dropping her incredible third album, Dirty Computer, in 2018.
After several years of balancing her musical career with her newfound fame as a movie star, appearing in prestigious films like Hidden Figures, Best Picture winner Moonlight, and last year’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Janelle returned back in the spring with vibey, dance-primed R&B pop tune “Float,” before, more recently. announcing that her fourth album- and first in five years- The Age of Pleasure, would arrive June 9. Along with that announcement came new single and risqué and sensual music video, “Lipstick Lover,” a more groovy, down-tempo tune that definitely sets the tone for Monáe’s next chapter.
In support of her musical return, Janelle will embark on a lengthy tour of theaters and amphitheaters throughout the summer and fall, including an Oct. 3 stop at The Ryman Auditorium, where she’s performed numerous times over the years, most recently in 2018. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. CDT right here, and demand is sure to be high! You can also try your luck with various pre-sales beginning Friday, June 2 (try code DISCO), and watch the singer’s new video for “Lipstick Lover” below!
