When the man pictured above is not playing sax for the the Rolling Stones, he’s leading his very own brass laced funk jam band called Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. If you’re not hip, just know this; they are widely considered one the best live bands currently in existence, and when you start digging into his music you’ll understand why. Most importantly, Mr. Denson and his band of merry makers will be performing in Music City on Sunday Dec. 4, at City Winery. He’ll have help from Memphis based performers Southern Avenue in the warm-up spot. Tickets for the show are currently available here, but if you’ve made it this far in the post, you might as well click on after the jump, and enter for your chance at two free tickets. You can also learn more about the line-up, while you try to digest your third left-over turkey sandwich in the last twenty-four hours. Enjoy embedded media, and remember to gobble in moderation.
KARL DENSON’S TINY UNIVERSE
For three decades now, Karl Denson has been putting his blood, sweat and tears into his music, and now that he’s found a backing band, the Tiny Universe, it’s safe to say he won’t be slowing down anytime soon. His resume is also about as bad ass as they come; getting his start in Lenny Kravitz’s band, before moving on to his critically acclaimed work as a founder of boogaloo revivalists The Greyboy Allstars, then working with reggae jam band Slightly Stoopid, and finally just recently finishing a run with The Stones that included the highest grossing concert festival of all time, Desert Trip in Indio, CA. Oh yeah, his work with Tiny Universe was peppered in throughout. Thanks to this incredibly diverse body of work, Karl’s sound touches a lot of bases, including (of course) brass music, funk, soul, and jam. Anytime you see the collective live you can expect some amazing songs from his 2014 release, New Ammo, plus inspired/unique covers of artists as diverse as Prince, Beastie Boys, & The White Stripes. Word is a new release is also planned for early 2017, so new material is sure to be included as well. See for yourself why this man is already a living legend, based on his collaborations alone, and develop a taste for his original flavor of jam band.
