They’ll be filling Marathon Music Works tonight, May 20 with some of their biggest hits, along with cuts from their brand new album iii, and it will be one of those shows you’ll be talking about for days after. MIIKE SNOW
Swedish indie pop trio Miike Snow have been providing infectious and innately danceable beats since 2007. Comprised of singer Andrew Wyatt and producers Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (better known by their stage title Bloodshy & Avant), the influential group originally met while Karlsson and Winberg were working on material for Britney Spears. The three musical geniuses quickly formed a creative bond, and went straight to work on music that combined hooky lyrics with infectious and directly pop production.
Their experiment turned into the group’s 2009 self-titled debut album, which became a hit with the release of their lead single “Animal.” The record was championed by pop listeners who were looking for something fresh and fun but still kept plenty of substance. Over the next few years, they toured heavily while remixing tracks from dozens of artists, including Passion Pit, Kings of Leon, Peter Bjorn and John, and Vampire Weekend.
After a busy three years, the group released their followup LP Happy to You, which featured the funky and infectious single “Paddling Out.” Much like “Animal,” the single could be heard almost everywhere in 2012, from television spots to inside your local mall. Although the trio began work on their next project soon after, they didn’t released their finished third album until 2015. The highly-anticipated record, appropriately titled iii, came out last October to wide acclaim. Their lead single, “Heart is Full,” helped bring plenty of buzz to the release, but their followup track is one of the record’s true gems. Current single “Genghis Khan” keeps up Miike Snow’s reputation of creating tracks that get stuck in your head for weeks on end. It’s not often that pop music as stellar as this makes its way to Nashville, so make sure you see them tear the roof off Marathon Music Works this month.
MYZICA
Indie pop duo MYZICA have a wonderfully synth-heavy, ’80s-inspired sound that has made them one of the most buzzed-about acts in town over the past year. With the release of debut self-titled EP last summer, they became a big part of Nashville’s burgeoning pop scene. Thanks to Isaaca Byrd’s silky vocals and the on-point production skills from Micah Tawlks, tracks like “Wait Just a Minute” and “Ready or Not” become impossible to resist. Their flawless sound takes on a whole new life on the live stage, so get there early and get ready to be swept away.
ELEL
We’ve been fans of local indie pop group ELEL since they first appeared on the scene years ago, winning 2014’s Road to Bonnaroo and endlessly hustling to create fun and inventive music. After lots of hustling and hard work, their single “40 Watt” brought them national exposure and even helped them land an appearance in Mike Birbiglia’s recent film Don’t Think Twice. In March, they released their debut self-titled EP on Mom + Pop Records, home to other local breakthrough artists like Wild Cub. Fresh from a trip to this year’s SXSW and their appearance at this year’s East Nashville Crawfish Bash, they are in top form to blow the crowd away during their appearance at Marathon Music Works.
Miike Snow, MYZICA, and ELEL will perform tonight, May 20 at Marathon Music Works. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $25-28.
