Matthew Logan Vasquez has been performing as the frontman of Delta Spirit for years, but this year he is turning over a new leaf with his solo career. On the wings of a late 2015 EP and early 2016 LP, he is touring in support, and will be stopping into Mercy Lounge on May 12 for what should be an incredible night from an immensely talented musician. Songwriters Reverend Baron and local Matt Haeck are set to open the show around 9 p.m. (doors at 8 p.m.). Tickets are still available here for $13, but we’re giving one lucky reader a pair of tickets to the show. Head below to find out more about the lineup, and to enter for your chance to win.
MATTHEW LOGAN VASQUEZ
Back in 2005, Matthew Logan Vasquez was a singer-songwriter performing on the streets in San Diego, when he was discovered by Jonathan Jameson and Brandon Young to help form Delta Spirit. Ten years and four full length Delta Spirit albums later, Vasquez is back to his roots, bringing his own songs to life. He did it in grand fashion too, releasing an EP, Austin, in November 2015 followed by a full length, Solicitor Returns, only three months later. In this personal journey, Matthew plays every instrument on the semi-autobiographical albums, which channel his true passion for rock music in the vein of Neil Young or Graham Parsons. Head below to hear the single “Maria” from the new album to get an idea of what his vision is all about.
REVEREND BARON
Reverend Baron is the musical moniker of Southern California skateboard legend Danny Garcia. Garcia has been playing music his whole life, but began to pursue it more seriously after fellow skater and musician Matt Costa gave him a push. Since 2012, Baron has released three EPs that are well done works of psych tinged folk, and is currently touring in support of Dust Anthem, which released last month.
MATT HAECK
Matt Haeck was born in the West Indies, but has called Nashville home since 2009. A talented songwriter in the vein of the Vasquez or Garcia, though with a bit more of that twang that tends to creep into songwriters in Music City. Matt was born in a religious household, but life sent him through a series of very challenging hurdles (alcohol, drugs, divorce, and depression) that he has battled through. Those battles are on display in his David Mayfield produced upcoming debut LP, Late Bloomer, due out on June 3. Head below to hear the lead single “Minnie Pearl,” which just premiered on American Songwriter, and is about a story of how Minnie Pearl drove a drunken and depressed Hank Williams around town trying to cheer him up.
