SANTIGOLD
In 2007, it was hard to go anywhere without hearing Santigold‘s (then named Santogold) ridiculously infectious track “L.E.S. Artistes.” The success of her self-titled debut album earned her critical acclaim and spots opening for huge touring acts like Björk, Coldplay, and Kanye West. After releasing her followup, Master of My Make-Believe, and teaming up with Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for their stellar track “Go!,” she spent months touring nonstop across the globe to massive crowds before heading back into the studio.
Although nine years have passed since she made her debut on the pop scene, not much has changed when it comes to her ability to make infectious hooks and inspired beats. In February, the Philadelphia-based producer dropped her third studio album, 99¢, which is largely centered around the music industry’s complicated relationship with consumerism. It’s being celebrated as one of her strongest and most experimental releases ever, which is a big deal for an artist as original as Santigold. Make sure you’re in attendance to see her blow the roof off Marathon Music Works tonight.
DONMONIQUE
21-year-old Brooklyn rapper DonMonique has been making waves in the hip hop scene since she dropped her debut EP, Thirst Trap, last year. Inspired by artists like Biggie and 50 Cent, her aggressive but feminine style and funky flow has made her a favorite of rap fans looking for something new and exciting. Her fun debut single, “Pilates (Kendall, Kylie, Miley),” helped to make her a star of the blogosphere only a year after starting her rap career. Hip hop as good as this rarely gets put in the spotlight here in Nashville, so make sure you check out DonMonique before she explodes onto the mainstream.
Santigold and Donmonique will perform tonight, April 22 at Marathon Music Works. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $25.
