As we announced a few months back, California noise punks Deerhoof are set to play their first Nashville show in four years, out in support of their phenomenal new LP, tonight, March 24 at Mercy Lounge. Sweetening the deal (and for only $12, it really is a deal), buzzy acts Perfect Pussy and Fred Thomas will support. Read on for a full preview!
DEERHOOF
In their now 20+ years of existence, California noise punks Deerhoof have seen several lineup changes and a sonic shift from minimalist to more fleshed out and pop-derived punk, but one constant has remained: their bombastic, surrealist, loud, and unparalleled live show. Part band and part surrealist piece of performance art, the group crafted their latest album, La Isla Bonita, around a deliberately more conventional and nostalgic punk concept. It’s been a few years since they last stopped off in Nashville, so tonight should be extra special- come hear new tunes and old favorites.
PERFECT PUSSY
In just three short years, Syracuse punks Perfect Pussy have become one of the most buzzworthy bands in the scene, combining elements of noise rock and hardcore to form their frenetic and aggressive sound. Led by electrifying frontwoman Meredith Graves, the band have amassed endless critical accolades, exceeded the hype surrounding them at fests like CMJ and SXSW, and managed to land on countless best of lists for their 2014 debut, Say Yes to Love. It’s an exciting time to catch this rising group, and they’re a great sonic compliment to Deerhoof.
FRED THOMAS
Michigan singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Fred Thomas is out in support of his upcoming LP, All Are Saved, which is set to drop April 7 via Polyvinyl. Thomas has spent the last two decades involved in various projects, including an early attraction to the noise rock scene. In recent years, he’s found success as a solo artist, crafting weird, eclectic, and layered tracks which only seem to get more hypnotic with each release. Show up early, because you don’t want to miss him.
Deerhoof, Perfect Pussy, and Fred Thomas will perform tonight, March 24 at Mercy Lounge. The show is 18+, begins at 9 p.m. (doors at 8 p.m.), and tickets are available for $12.
