It seems like the holidays put the slow down on all of us. Gluttonous amounts of food and drink, general laziness, too much time with family… it’s all fun, but it is getting in the way of seeing great music these days. You can see it on the concert calendars around town, and you can certainly see it in new music releases. So, I’m just going to have to work a little harder to find some great music that you should get out to see.
I found an opener tonight that is definitely worth your time on a Monday evening. Oxford Mississippi’s Young Buffalo are opening things up tonight at The Basement. This three piece has definitely been a band on the rise for a while now, earning spots at South By Southwest, CMJ festival, Next Big Nashville (aka Soundland) for the past couple of years, and Daytrotter called them in earlier this year. They’ve toured with the Arctic Monkeys and the Vaccines. Their harmonic vocals backed by jangly guitars and a driving percussion are a pretty cool sound that I spent quite a bit of time with recently, and I am really excited to see them live tonight.
I’ve attached the bandcamp player of their Young Von Prettylips EP below so that you can get to know them before the show tonight. I also had to include the link to their cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems For A 17 Year Old Girl” below (you can grab your own copy of that at their Bandcamp page). I hear a lot of complaining about these late night shows on school nights, but this is the opener so you can definitely get back home by a decent time. If you are so inclined Daneverly and Bern Kelly will be following up Young Buffalo. Things get started around 9pm, and tickets are only $5. Get out and see some live music.
