[TICKET GIVEAWAY] Chuck Prophet & Joseph Arthur | July 19 @ City Winery

ChuckProphey_JosephArthur-620

Two eclectic, influential songwriting talents, Chuck Prophet and Joseph Arthur, are teaming up to play City Winery next week, July 19. With long and prolific careers, both singers could definitely be described as underrated; while they’ve achieved some longstanding and admirable success, neither are, perhaps, the household names they deserve to be, despite their impressive pedigree. Prophet will be joined by a string quartet for this special intimate affair, and Arthur is out in support of an inspired new release, The Family, making this a perfectly-matched, fantastic double bill. Tickets are still available right here, but we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Read on for more about the show and enter below!

CHUCK PROPHET

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Chuck Prophet first rose to recognition in the ’80s as part of Green on Red, the group he joined after relocating to San Francisco from his native Whittier, CA. Shifting from psychedelic and desert rock-tinged early efforts, influencing the Paisley Underground movement, to more country-leaning songs with later releases, the band provided a launchpad for Prophet’s prolific solo career, which began with 1990’s Brother Aldo. In the two and a half decades since, Chuck has become a staple of the alt-country scene and an in-demand, successful songwriter, drawing comparisons to artists like Ray Davies and Tom Petty. A gifted singer and lyricist with eclectic musical sensibilities, Prophet’s music has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, and he’s collaborated with or written for the likes of Lucinda Williams, Jonathan Richman, Heart, and even Bruce Springsteen. Throughout the ’00s, the singer has found something of a second wind, first through New West Records then more recently Yep Roc, where a prolific stream of full-lengths, most recently 2014’s Night Surfer, have garnered attention both stateside and abroad. For this special, intimate City Winery show, Chuck will be joined by a string quartet, so it’s guaranteed to be a memorable affair.

JOSEPH ARTHUR

Ohio born, Brooklyn based singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur got his musical beginnings in Atlanta, originally aspiring to be an accomplished jazz fusion bassist before changing taste prompted him to take a stab a songwriting, and a chance discovery by Peter Gabriel helped him nab an early record deal, effectively launching his solo career in the mid-’90s. Nothing if not prolific, the folky, indie, alt-rock singer hit his most impressive stride in the ’00s, releasing nine EPs and five full-lengths between 2002 and 2008 alone. Sophomore LP Come to Where I’m From, released in 2000, helped Joseph attract a mainstream audience in the U.S., and even prompted covers from Coldplay’s Chris Martin and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. Since then, the eclectic, emotionally charged singer has contributed to numerous soundtracks, toured the world, and collaborated with tons of A-list talent, proving to be a compelling live performer both solo (using loops and simples) and with one-time backing band The Lonely Astronauts. Active as ever, in recent years Arthur has formed a superband with Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison called Fistful of Mercy, released a tribute to Lou Reed, and continued to craft powerful, independent solo efforts, making him one of the most compelling songwriters in recent memory.
