Out in support of their fantastic new album The Magic, acclaimed, long-running San Francisco experimental rockers Deerhoof return to Nashville next week, Aug. 10, for a performance at Mercy Lounge, their second Music City show in just as many years after a bit of a slowdown on tour dates. Backed by punk up and comers Blank Spell and local experimental rockers Linear Downfall, Deerhoof are enjoying an especially prolific couple of years, meaning it’s prime time to take in their celebrated, unparalleled live show. Tickets for their upcoming return are still available right here, but we’re also giving away tickets to one lucky fan! Find out more about the lineup and enter below!
DEERHOOF
In their now 20+ years of existence, California noise punks Deerhoof have seen several lineup changes and a sonic shift from minimalist to more fleshed out and pop-derived punk, but one constant has remained: their bombastic, surrealist, loud, and unparalleled live show. Hailing from San Francisco, the group are known for producing their own music and managing their own career, crafting such modern classics as Reveille and Offend Maggie among their many, many albums, and sharing the stage with the likes of Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, Beck, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs throughout decades of touring. Part band and part surrealist piece of performance art, the prolific group have released an impressive three albums since their last Nashville outing, just last spring: a live album, an orchestral collaboration, and phenomenal new full-length, The Magic. On their latest, Deerhoof manage to capture the experimentation, scope, energy, punk spirit, and, well, magic of their live show, and it’s already one of our favorite records of the year. Give it a spin and get ready to see them in action!
BLANK SPELL
Hailing from Philadelphia, punk newcomers Blank Spell share Deerhoof’s DIY aesthetic, wild energy, and unconventional sensibilities, landing a little more on the dark, raw, punk side of the spectrum. Though, so far, they seem only to have a handful of demos and an EP to their name, the group’s debut album is apparently in the works, and we have a feeling they soar live.
LINEAR DOWNFALL
Linear Downfall perhaps first captured national headlines when they teamed up with The Flaming Lips to form supergroup the Electric Würms a couple years back, but we’ve long known and loved the local experimental rockers for their primary work. Formed more than a decade ago, the band have self-released an EP and four albums, the latest accompanied by a stunning full-length film, and have mastered blending melodic, experimental tones with noisy, dissonant chaos. A perfect addition to this lineup, Linear Downfall are sure to set the mood (and the bar) for the rest of the bill, so show up early and support the locals.
