We are very pleased to report that Nashville’s own soul-funk band DeRobert & The Half-Truths are about to release their second full-length album. A recent cash injection from last year’s successful Kickstarter campaign poised record label G.E.D. Soul Records to spread the sweet sounds of this immensely talented and soulful band. The release date is not until next week (January 14, 2014 to be exact), but you can preorder your LP, CD, or MP3s on their website now. They expect records to actually hit shops on January 21st. Continue on after the jump for more info and their latest music video.
Many of us at No Country for New Nashville have had the pleasure of seeing DeRobert & the Half-Truths perform around Nashville. There is nothing in this world like seeing a good soul band complete with horn section and completely earth-shattering vocals. These guys managed to capture much of that energy on this record. They coyly draw you in on the first track with “I’m Tryin’,” a gospel tune with only voices and clapping. Your head gets rocking, and your foot gets tapping just in time for the horns and drums to drop in for the second track “My Momma Told Me.” The way everything in the band fits together tightly, you can tell these musicians have been performing together for some years. And the voice of singer DeRobert Adams is a beautiful balance of the clean, precise discipline of a modern R&B singer with the emotive, unrestrained cry of a gospel soloist.
While the album is solid from top to bottom, the single “Going Places” has that extra little something. We’re not sure if it’s the groovy drum beat, the guitar rhythm riff, the reverby slap of the wah guitar, the perfect placement of horns, the hook, or all of them together, but it’s definite mojo! Take a moment to check out the music video embedded above, and if that gets you moving, then you should seriously consider this album.
