The big winter freeze has subsided, and now this 40 degree weather should bring us all bounding out of hiding to enjoy the weekend. While the full winter/spring tours have not kicked off at full steam yet, we still have a pretty good mix of national and local, power rock to singer songwriters, and rockers of the future and past. It’s another great weekend for music in Nashville, and we’ve run down our staff picks in this week’s edition of TWiN.
FRIDAY
THAT’S MY KID

While you’re enjoying your awesomely delicious Soulshine pie why not check out local rockers That’s My Kid for FREE? Their raw nerve blues rock ’n’ roll and howling vocal reminds us of a younger, less strung out version of KOL. Don’t believe us? Check out their live video below. [JR]

HERZOG W/ SPANISH CANDLES AND STUDY HALL
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | ? | 18+
Indie/power pop group Herzog will bring their high-energy, eclectic, no-frills sound to The Stone Fox, supported by great local acts Spanish Candles and Study Hall! We’re big fans of both of the Cleveland, OH band’s releases, and definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a killer, intimate show. [initials]
CORY CHISEL AND THE WANDERING SONS W/ PATRICK SWEANY AND PROMISED LAND SOUND
@ The Basement | 8pm | $3 (must RSVP) | 21+
Nashville’s Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons recorded their most recent album, Old Believers, here in town at studio “Welcome To 1979” and toured in support of it with Norah Jones. Chisel has warm, dusty, soulful pipes to match easy on the eyes looks and the Wandering Sons are the cherry on top. Check out their KEXP performance for their friends in Tennessee below. Patrick Sweany returns to Nashville following a rockin blues Americana Music Festival 2013 performance. Promised Land Sound are a band to keep an eye on. Their most recent album, Stoned Eagle, was recorded at The Bomb Shelter studio (Alabama Shakes, Natural Child, The Ettes, Fly Golden Eagle, Hurray For The Riff Raff). [LT]
HOTEL WAR, NATURAL OUTLAW, THE HUNGRY EARS & JOSH “Foster” FARROW
@ The 5 Spot | 9pm | $cheap | 21+
Local rockers Hotel War have been turning heads already in 2014. The band just released their new single “Casino”, and have been on quite a few bills around town lately. HW seem poised and motivated to take over Nashville in 2014. Local crooner Josh Farrow was cool enough to rock our recent caroling event, and cheers to him for being a good sport. Natural Outlaw and Bowling Green’s The Hungry Ears round out the bill. This is a solid Saturday night option for those on the East Side. [MH]
TYLER HILTON W/ RUSSELL HOWARD
@3rd & Lindsley | 9:30pm | $10 | All Ages
What happens if you combine 1) Elvis Presley from the movie Walk The Line, 2) Chris Keller from One Tree Hill, 3) a regular in Taylor Swift videos, and 4) Howie Day? If you came up with anything other than Tyler Hilton, then, well, you should probably just give up. Russell Howard opens for what is sure to be an intimate Saturday evening at 3rd & Lindsley. [MH]
SATURDAY
DYLAN LEBLANC AND GRAYSON CAPPS
@ The High Watt | 9pm | $10 | 18+
Rough Trade recording artist Dylan LeBlanc hails from the deep south, but calls Muscle Shoals home these days. His heartfelt lyrics and touching melodies are something to behold. Honestly, this is typically the type of jam that I would curl up with a cup of tea on a cold night to enjoy. Go ahead and ask The High Watt staff for some steeped Earl Grey, and then pour a nip of whiskey in there for maximum enjoyment. [MH]
CROSSES (†††) (ft. CHINO MORENO OF DEFTONES, SHAUN LOPEZ OF FAR & CHUCK DOOM) W/ SPECIAL GUEST, DAWN GOLDEN
@ The Cannery Ballroom| 9pm | $15-18 | 18+
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno‘s side project, ††† (pronounced Crosses), is a far leap from the hard rock sound he’s famous for. Also featuring Far guitarist Shaun Lopez and Chuck Doom, the band channel an industrial, layered sound reminiscent of a slightly poppier Nine Inch Nails. Look for their debut full-length later this year! Dawn Golden and a special guest will open. [PO]
RB MORRIS w/ AMELIA WHITE
@ The Stone Fox | 9pm | $10 | 18+
A true Renaissance man, hailing from Knoxville, RB Morris has had his finger in many pies. He’s a published poet, a singer/song-writer, a play write and an actor. Lately it’s mostly about the music and if your looking for a folky and chill Saturday night check him out. If you also really want to get your moneys worth don’t miss local Amelia White’s Americana pop to start the evening entertainment. [JR]
DEEP MACHINE W/ OPPOSITE BOX & MONTEZUMA FIRE MACHINE
@ The End | 9pm | $5 | 18+
This performance will be one of the last shows of Deep Machine’s current band line up. Their mixer of STS9-esque electronics with psychedelic rock, latin & metal touches plus introspective audio samples will have your head spinning, in a good way! Montezuma Fire Machine present an instrumental energy of mind-expanding grooves and driving dance beats with soaring violin / Theremin. Opposite Box will bring their Zappa-esque jam carnival of percussion, Sousaphone, belly dancing and more. [LT]
TOWER DEFENSE, FRIENDSHIP COMMANDERS, SLICK, HAPPY LITTLE TREES
@ The 5 Spot | 9pm | $5 | 18+
Yes, Tower Defense is the name of that addicting Flash game you played years ago, but did you know it’s also the name of a new Nashville based trio. Featuring two basses, drums, and vocals, Tower Defense manages to create memorable music using a vastly different sonic palette that most bands. Opening up for Tower Defense is Friendship Commanders, Slick, and Happy Little Trees. This is the first official weekend of the 2014; ring it in right with some of Nashville’s newest musical acts. [JS]
FLY GOLDEN EAGLE
@ Springwater Supper Club | 9pm | ?? | 21+
A favorite of the site, local psychedelic garage rockers Fly Golden Eagle will grace the stage of Nashville’s quintessential dive bar this weekend, Springwater Supper Club. Specific details are scant, but expect it to cost in the neighborhood of $5, start around 9ish, and feature some other great bands! [PO]
SUNDAY
MODOC W/ ALL THEM WITCHES
@ 3rd & Lindsley | 8pm (doors at 6pm) | $10 | All Ages
MODOC! Sounds like the name of some fantasy villain, no? In actuality, Modoc is one of Nashville’s fastest rising indie blues group. Take a brief listen to the track below, and tell us those echoed vocals don’t get you in a bluesy mood. Opening for Modoc is All Them Witches, fellow masters of melody who recently played our Christmas party. All in all, this seems like a pretty solid Sunday over at 3rd and Lindsley, and congratulations to the winner of our contest this week! [JS]
SELF W/ GLOSSARY & MONTESSORI DADS
@ Exit/In | 9pm (doors at 8pm) | SOLD OUT | 18+
This show is already sold out, but for good reason: Nashville native Self (or sElf or SeLF or however you want to stylize it these days) is returning to play through his record Subliminal Plastic Motives in its entirety. This monumental event is set up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album. If you haven’t heard of Self, chances are you probably didn’t buy tickets before it sold out, but just in case he plays a pop punk fusion sound with electronic influences. It’s all rather heady and probably makes for a spectacular live show. [JS]
