Part of an exciting wave of bands that emerged at the start of 2010s, at the time dubbed the “emo revival,” who helped breathe new excitement, a return to a DIY ethos, and a more grounded and scrappy sound much needed after the pop punk and emo scene of the 2000s had morphed into a lot of overproduced, mainstream-poised, hollow copycats by the end of that decade, Citizen formed in 2009, with members previously being a part of Ohio and Michigan’s metalcore and hardcore scene. With Citizen, however, and particularly with 2013’s now-classic full-length debut, Youth, the band adapted a sound more rooted in emo, with elements of grunge and indie rock, which has only matured and expanded over the decade since, incorporating more elements of shoegaze, experimental rock, post-punk, and more, before exploring a more deconstructed alt, pop, and raw indie approach with their latest and fifth album, last month’s Calling the Dogs.

Now a decade removed from that buzzy “emo revival” moniker, it’s clear that Citizen and many of their peers have aged infinitely better than the pop punk bands of the decade before them, and continue to evolve and resonate both with longtime fans and new listeners, staying true to their earnest, organic aesthetic and personal, impassioned approach to songwriting. No strangers to Nashville, we’ve watched the band grow from the city’s tiniest dives to larger clubs, and after supporting Turnstile last year at Brooklyn Bowl, they’re back in support of their latest LP on Nov. 10 to headline Eastside Bowl with heavy, alt and shoegaze Texas outfit Narrow Head and California alt/post-hardcore rockers Modern Color. You can still get tickets right here while they last, but we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan! Preview the performers and enter below.
