Now in its 55th year, the annual Nashville Film Festival returns to Music City this week, Sept. 19-25, boasting tons of incredible feature films, documentaries, shorts, world premieres, student films, creator panels, awards, and much more! More modestly-sized compared to some of the flashier fests around the nation like TIFF, Sundance, or Telluride, Nashville’s fest is, nonetheless, vibrant and unique in its own right, and leaning into the city’s musical associations, as well as showcasing tons of Tennessee filmmaking talent, has long been an important component. From the opening night presentation of a documentary about Devo, to a festival closing documentary about Nashville residents The Black Keys, plus docs about the dire state of local independent venues, the changing landscape of country music, portraits of greats like Linda Perry and Melissa Etheridge with those respective subjects in attendance, some fascinating musical history lessons, music video pairings with narrative features, and more, this year’s fest has lots of great musical programming, specifically when it comes to documentaries. We’ve combed through the whole schedule, and while there are plenty of great non-musical features that caught our eye (Clone Cops, Griffin in Summer, My Old Ass, Saturday Night, In the Summers, Memoir of a Snail, Your Monster, and Little Bites, to name a few, not to mention dozens of intriguing shorts), we wanted to give your a rundown of the 13 music documentaries on the schedule!
As of writing, tickets are still available for nearly every film on this list, and can be purchased from the fest’s site, where you’ll also find a more comprehensive schedule, for $16. The site is also where you can buy budges, with options like full festival access, creators conference only (no screenings, just panels, mixers, and networking events), or a film-only badge which nets you a slight discount if you plan to see a lot of screenings- find all of those options here. As mentioned, several screenings include Q&As from filmmakers and artists (we’ve marked where applicable), and the bulk of the festival will be hosted at Regal Green Hills, with opening and closing day screenings at The Belcourt Theatre, and a handful of screenings at The Franklin Theatre and Soho House. The Creators Conference panels and events (which include some musical topics too like “The Growth of Tennessee’s Entertainment Industry” and “The Magic of Music in Cinema”) will be held at the Hilton Green Hills (and require the appropriate badge), and a few other parties and events for badge holders are being held across town.
Below, check out our rundown of 13 musical docs- just a taste of the great programming at this year’s Nashville Film Festival- and keep scrolling for a full list of screenings at this year’s fest!
DEVO
Thursday, Sept. 19 | 3:30pm | The Belcourt
“Explore Devo’s 50-year career through never-before-seen archival and interviews with co-founders Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale. Born in response to the Kent State massacre, Devo took their concept of ‘de-evolution’ from a cult following to near-rock star status with their groundbreaking 1980 hit ‘Whip It,’ all while preaching an urgent social commentary. The film is directed by Chris Smith, whose credits include Wham!, Fyre, 100 Foot Wave, and Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond. The film is a co-production of VICE Studios, Fremantle, and Library Films.”
REBEL COUNTRY
Thursday, Sept. 19 | 6:15pm | The Belcourt
“Country music is changing — or maybe it’s returning to its roots. This musical documentary traces the troubled history and inclusive future of the genre with performances from today’s most talented iconoclasts, including Blanco Brown, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, and BRELAND.”
There will be a Q&A after the screening with musicians, Sam Williams and Frank Ray.
A MAN CALLED HURT: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT
Friday, Sept. 20 | 3:30pm | Regal Green Hills
& Tuesday, Sept. 24 | 9pm | The Franklin Theatre
“A Man Called Hurt chronicles the life and influence of Mississippi John Hurt on the music world. Featuring interviews from Mary Frances Hurt, John Sebastian of The Loving Spoonful, Happy Traum, Guy Davis, Dom Flemons, and others, our hope with this film is not only to educate the world about the impact of this fascinating man, but also to raise money for the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation.”
LINDA PERRY: LET IT DIE HERE
Friday, Sept. 20 | 6pm | Regal Green Hills
“Linda Perry is one of the most outspoken and recognizable artists of the past 30 years. The hat, tattoos, and massive hit single ‘What’s Up’ with her band 4 Non-Blondes made her an icon. But in the decades since that song topped the charts, Linda has reinvented herself as a songwriter and producer, penning hit-after-hit for artists like Dolly Parton, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Pink and others. While the story of Linda’s career and craft is extraordinary, this film is much more. Let It Die Here is an intimate look at a vulnerable and courageous woman as she navigates life-altering personal circumstances amidst gnawing career decisions. Linda struggles with fear, shame, and the burdens of family as she seeks answers to the big questions she can no longer avoid: Who am I? Am I loved? What’s my purpose? What will I leave behind?”
Director, Don Hardy and GRAMMY®-nominated musician Linda Perry will be in attendance for a Q&A.
THE DAY THE MUSIC STOPPED
Friday, Sept. 20 | 6pm | Regal Green Hills (SOLD OUT)
“The Day the Music Stopped is a feature-length documentary examining the decade-long struggle of independent music venues and the creative class they support against developers and concert promoter Live Nation. Taking place in Nashville, Tennessee, dubbed ‘Music City USA,’ our story is depicted through the lens of Exit/In, one of the nation’s most historic independent venues. We watch as the club’s owner/operator Chris Cobb, the musicians who perform there and political allies work together to save the club from imminent corporate takeover.”
SONGS FROM THE HOLE
Friday, Sept. 20 | 6:30pm | Regal Green Hills
“At 15, he took a life. Three days later, his brother’s life was taken. A moving chronicle of forgiveness, family, and the transformative power of art, Songs from the Hole weaves music and mixed-media storytelling into an innovative documentary visual album. Through clear-eyed narration and lyrical journal entries, incarcerated musician James “JJ’88” Jacobs reveals his innermost struggles as a person who has both committed and experienced violent harm. While serving a double-life prison sentence, he searches for healing and peace as he comes of age in this documentary-musical odyssey composed behind bars. In a unique creative process director Contessa Gayles (The Feminist on Cellblock Y, Founder Girls) collaborated with protagonist/writer JJ’88 and producer/music producer richie reseda to interweave the collective storytelling of the film’s non-fiction participants, with imagined memories, dreams and spiritual dialogues set to JJ’88’s original music. The result is a powerful mix of truth-telling and dreaming that reveal the potential for healing and liberation within us all.”

MELISSA ETHERIDGE: I’M NOT BROKEN
Sunday, Sept. 22 | 6pm | Regal Green Hills
“Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken tells an inspiring story of healing and transcendence through the power of music when five female residents from the Topeka Correctional Facility, a women’s prison in Kansas, write letters to Etheridge that she then uses as inspiration to create and perform an original song for them. Having recently lost her son to opioids, Etheridge works to understand and interrupt the cycle of addiction while connecting with these women who, so often, are forgotten by society. Additionally, the docuseries explores themes of female incarceration, redemption, substance abuse, generational trauma, grief and healing. With female incarceration rates up 700 percent since 1980, Etheridge bonds with the women through the conduit of music as an act of empathy, understanding and hope. Learn more about how to help incarcerated women through the Women’s Prison Association. WPA empowers women to redefine their lives and is dedicated to every woman’s freedom, safety, and independence. Visit WPAonline.org for more.”
Two-time GRAMMY® winning musician, Melissa Etheridge will be in attendance for a Q&A.
FANATICAL: THE CATFISHING OF TEGAN AND SARA
Monday, Sept. 23 | 9pm | Regal Green Hills
“With 10 studio albums to their name, Canadian pop duo and twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin are trailblazers both as openly queer performers and as artists who were quick to embrace social media in its nascent era. Tegan and Sara became known for being accessible to their fans and cultivating a safe space, especially for young LGBTQ+ women, some of whom saw themselves reflected in pop music for the first time. Around 2010, social media profiles claiming to be Tegan started popping up. An anonymous, catfishing person connected with people in the fan community, forming friendships, and online romances, sharing personal information of Tegan’s and fabricating stories of her bad behaviour. More than just a portrait of Tegan and Sara’s global ascent and their influence and advocacy in the music industry, this documentary film charts the evolution of social media’s impact on fame and fandom through the duo’s years-long victimization and harassment at the hands of this ‘fan.'”
THIS IS A FILM ABOUT THE BLACK KEYS
Tuesday, Sept. 24 | 6:30pm | The Belcourt
“This is a film about The Black Keys traces Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney’s journey from a jamming session in a basement in Akron, Ohio, to rock ’n’ roll super-stardom. They barely knew each other when they made their first recordings, yet quickly realized they shared a powerful musical connection and a drive to succeed. Touring relentlessly for ten years, the duo navigated the highs and lows of life on the road, finally reaching escape velocity with their hit records Brothers and El Camino. As so many forces have threatened to pull them apart, the band has managed to stick together. 24 years later, they’re tighter than ever, still making great music and still asking what’s next.”
