If you’re a longtime fan of Australian psych rock outfit Pond, you probably first found them through famed outfit Tame Impala (if not, congrats on being cooler than most), a like-minded, fellow Aussie project which shares friendships, members, crew, production, and musical influences with Pond (Tame’s primary member, Kevin Parker, was once a member and long-running producer of Pond, and several members of Pond, including singer Nick Allbrook, have or currently play in Tame’s live band).
Formed in 2008 in Perth, the band’s early years were marked by a revolving lineup of players, but they’ve more or less been locked in with the current group since the 2010s (drummer Gin Ireland was the latest to join, in 2016). While early efforts were met with positive praise, particularly at home, 2012 fourth album Beard, Wives, Denim began to attract more mainstream attention, and it was around that time that Pond began to tour more broadly, including stateside. A string of fantastic records have followed, pushing the bounds of their pop accessible, layered psych-rock and neo-psych, with 2017 seventh album The Weather notching some even more widespread attention thanks to singles like “Paint Me Silver” and “Sweep Me Off My Feet.” Following their most recent and (as the title would suggest) ninth album, 9, in 2021, Pond are set to drop their latest, a more sprawling and expansive LP called Stung!, on June 21, and will play Nashville for the first time in several years tonight, May 1 at The Basement East in support.
It was a little over a year ago that Pond were initially slated to kick off a spring North American tour in Nashville, but were forced to cancel the run due to visa issues. That makes this their first Nashville show since 2018 , when they played Mercy Lounge and Bonnaroo, making it all the more essential for fans of their unique flavor of psychedelia. Psych and indie pop artist 26fix will open, and tickets are still available here. Don’t miss it!
Pond and 26fix will perform tonight, May 1 at The Basement East. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m), and tickets are available for $38.54.
