The longtime musical vessel of singer and multi-instrumentalist Stacy King, Sucré began as a sort of side/solo project apart from her siblings, more than a decade ago towards the end of Stacy’s time in beloved indie pop group Eisley (the band was formed in childhood with her sisters and brother, achieved fame in the 2000s with a series of fantastic records, and King remained a member until 2015). Sucré’s debut album, A Minor Bird, arrived in 2012, and featured production and collaboration from King’s husband, Darren King (formerly of Mutemath and now an accomplished producer and solo performer in his own right), as well as multi-instrumentalist and arranger Jeremy Larson. In the more than decade since, the Kings relocated to Nashville full-time, Stacy departed Eisley and has made Sucré her primary musical outlet, and, in increasing collaboration with Darren, has evolved the project’s sound from the the sweeping, cinematic, Eisley-adjacent indie pop of the first LP and subsequent EP, 2014’s Loner, to a more electro-infused, experimental, layered, rhythmic, and thoroughly modern one across more than a dozen singles in the last five years.
Though Sucré has stayed active in the studio, especially since 2018, crafting a full-length followup to A Minor Bird has been a long journey, but one that will finally culminate in highly-anticipated sophomore LP Starkisser, set to arrive tomorrow, Sept. 29 via Bandcamp. We got an early listen, and can confirm that it’s every bit the lush, etherial fusion of dreamy indie pop, orchestral hooks, and electronic flourish that we’ve come to expect from the project, and is a lovely portrait of King’s evolution as a songwriter and immensely gifted vocalist over the last decade. In celebration, Sucré will play Nashville for the first time in several years tonight, Sept. 28 at The East Room, along with local alt/pop faves VEAUX and indie singer-songwriter Billy! Tickets are still available here, and you can watch Sucré’s recent video for title track “Starkisser” below, before the album drops tomorrow. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Kings, or just now learning about Sucré, we encourage you not to miss a rare live performance from this incredible local artist
Sucre, VEAUX, and Billy! will perform tonight, Sept. 28 at The East Room. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available for $18.75.
