Enjoying a wave of buzz thanks to their great new album, Painting for a Panic Attack, Scottish indie rockers Frightened Rabbit are set to play Nashville for the first time in three and a half years tonight, Sept. 26 at Marathon Music Works. A highly-anticipated performance in of itself, this show became even more indispensable with the addition of local(ish) breakout singer Julien Baker, whose rise in the indie rock scene has been meteoric this year. Tickets to the show are still available here, so grab yours now and keep reading for a full preview!
FRIGHTENED RABBIT
Hailing from Selkirk, Scotland, indie rockers Frightened Rabbit burst onto the scene a decade ago with their scrappy debut, Sing the Greys, but really started turning heads in a major way with breakout 2013 fourth album and major label debut Pedestrian Verse. Formed in 2003, initially intended as a solo vehicle for frontman Scott Hutchison, Frightened Rabbit had blossomed into a proper band by 2008 sophomore effort The Midnight Organ First, met with positive reviews and praise throughout the blogosphere, enabling the group to begin touring extensively, supporting big names like Death Cab for Cutie, and eventually making their stateside television debut in 2010. Over the past few years, and especially thanks to Pedestrian Verse, the band, whose lineup has shifted here and there, but has maintained mostly steady since 2009, have become regular fixtures on the major festival circuit, as well as a popular choice for film and television placements, touring regularly and even exploring a new outlet in the form of side project Owl John. Their latest and fifth album, this year’s Painting of a Panic Attack, was produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, culminating in some of their most resonant, mature, and engaging material to date. An accomplished live act, it feels like there’s never been a better time to see Frightened Rabbit live, and with a track record of only intermittently making their way to Nashville, you shouldn’t pass this one up!
JULIEN BAKER
If you’re dialed into the indie scene, then you’ve very likely heard of buzzworthy up and coming songstress Julien Baker, whose sprawling, sad full-length debut, Sprained Ankle, was ranked among 2015’s best releases (and for good reason; it’s incredible). What you might not know, however, is that Baker is local, or at least local-ish. Raised in Memphis, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter relocated to Murfreesboro to attend MTSU a couple years back, and cut her teeth in the Nashville scene fronting the group Forrister (formerly The Star Killers), who we frequently wrote about in recent years when they often served as support for under the radar emo, indie, and pop punk shows. Since stepping out on her own, after pursuing a new crop of songs she didn’t feel were good fit for the band, Julien has been met with widespread critical acclaim as a solo artist, and has since appeared at numerous festivals, on impressive collaborations, and in countless high-profile media outlets. If you haven’t yet jumped on the Julien Baker bandwagon, this show’s a perfect place to start.
Frightened Rabbit and Julien Baker will perform tonight, Sept. 26 at Marathon Music Works. The show is 18+, begins at 8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), and tickets are available to purchase for $22.
