Questlove spent two hours laying down the beats on Saturday night for The Roots, but that didn’t slow him down in the slightest for one of the most memorable Superjam sets in Bonnaroo history early Sunday morning. Questlove beat out a slow, groovy drum beat while he introduced the players for the evening. Of course, almost everyone else was forgotten when the magical “I’ve be waiting 12 years to say these words, Ladies and Gentlemen… D’Angelo”. We’ve known about the history between Quest and D’Angelo, so I guess it shouldn’t really have been that much of a surprise to anyone that D’Angelo would make this Superjam his first U.S. appearance in over a decade. I will tell you that it didn’t keep the packed to the gills tent from practically blowing the roof off that thing with cheers. I can’t (and don’t want to) really describe what happened in there, and I would rather you just the watch the official video bits and the full audio stream below that have been released so far. This was definitely a highlight of the festival… I just hope it translates through your crappy computer speakers.
For those that are interested, and you should be, the remaining players were no stiffs with the likes The Roots’ guitarist Kirk Douglas, one of the most acclaimed keyboard players out there right now James Poyser, Questlove disciple and Roots percussionist Frank Knuckles, Pino Palladino on the bass, saxophone man of Prince fame Eric Leeds, more Prince and The Time guitarist Jesse Johnson, and Kendra Foster of P-Funk fame on vocals.
