Jack White’s Interview with Duff McKagan & Outside Lands Pop Up Show Footage

What do you get when you have Duff McKagan (the founding bassist for Guns n’ Roses) call up Jack White for an interview?  Well, it isn’t as much of an interview as a “bro-down”.  It’s a pretty good read if you haven’t had the chance yet.

In other news, remember me telling you about having free tickets and airfare to Outside Lands in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park last weekend?  Well, the knife twisted inside of me on Sunday afternoon when text messages and tweets started to roll in announcing different pop-up shows in the woods of Golden Gate Park.  Check out three videos by Bonnaroo 365 below of Jack White’s surprise pop up show.

I’m a freaking idiot.

Outside Lands Goes Viral…

What do you think has been the best festival lineup of 2012? For me, hands down, no contest, no question, shine a lamp in my eyes, I’ll still tell you the same thing, it is…. Outside Lands. Anyway, pity party aside, let’s move forward positively, shall we. Neither you, nor I are going to this awesomeness, but you can still catch tons of it via the power of the internet. You can tune in through Tune In to live performances at the festival. They even have an app that you can download. Hit up Tune In here to learn more. The full Tune In lineup is below.

You can also check out the Free Yr Radio webcast with another full lineup. You can’t get this one on the smart phone, but you can tune into Stanford University Radio to stream it live through your computer. The full lineup for that one is below too.

The music calendar in Nashville is oddly light this weekend for the music we all care about. Apparently, it is because everyone is apparently in San Francisco right now, so get out and listen to some live music.

Outside Lands 2012 Announce Your Summer Vacation

The fine folks at Another Planet Entertainment and Superfly Presents have laid down another epic lineup for this year’s Outside Lands festival from August 10-12 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.  For those of you that have written off the idea of a four day, hot, sweaty, dirty, camping experience for a music festival this might be just the opportunity for you.  The weather is typically cool in the city by the bay, you will be staying in a hotel (or on someone’s couch), and you can easily bike to the festival each day.  Alright, there’s my sales pitch for the San Francisco tourist board.  So, check the lineup below to see if I just helped you plan your summer vacation.  Tickets go on sale tomorrow, and you can snag those here.

2011 Outside Lands Reviews

I’ve been AWOL for the past three days.  I know, I missed you too.  I escaped the Tennessee heat for a little time in San Francisco to check out some bands at the Outside Lands festival (thanks a lot to the folks over at Superfly Presents for making it possible).  Outside Lands is set in San Francisco’s beautiful Golden Gate Park, and is usually a foggy cold place to be in the middle of the summer.  This year’s festival could not have been graced with more beautiful weather.  As Arcade Fire’s Win Butler said that weather like this makes him want to move here.  I know the feeling, pal.

So, my Saturday lineup was OK GO!, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, and Girl Talk.  On Sunday, I wandered a bit more and spent time with Ty Segall, Major Lazer, Wye Oak, Beirut, and Arcade Fire.  The highlights of the festival for me were Arctic Monkeys, Girl Talk, Ty Segall, and Wye Oak.  The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, and Beirut were awesome, as always, but it was the same awesome I am used to seeing from them.  OK GO! has a lot of energy and a great stage presence, but I think I was really looking forward to some live renditions of their amazing videos.  I was looking for new bands that I haven’t heard yet.

Below you will find mini-reviews of my four highlights of the weekend.  If you want more complete festival coverage, I’d recommend San Francisco’s 7X7 Magazine.

I’ve been listening to Arctic Monkeys since their 2006 debut LP Whatever People Say, That’s What I’m Not.  It’s a good sound.  Sort of an English punk wrapped in all the indie hooks that you need to keep people listening.  As the band progressed with their next three LPs, I was ho-hum.  Well, they dispell rumors and put on a whale of a show.  You should make plans to head over to the War Memorial in Nashville to see them on October 5th.  Opening act Smith-Westerns is a bonus.

Greg Gillis (dba Girl Talk) is the mashup king.  It’s not really the kind of music that I ever thought I would spend time trying to see live.  I mean how much better can computer driven mashup’s be than they are on the CD.  Lots and lots and lots and lots of crowd energy, that’s how.  I was trying to leave the festival to meet some friends, and found myself “stuck” in the Girl Talk crowd.  It was insane.  Tens of thousands of people were going nuts while Gillis churned literally hundreds of samples in a frenetic, seamless progression.  I don’t know of any plans for Girl Talk to come through Nashville, so you’ll likely have to travel or wait to see this magician.

Ty Segall is a San Francisco based rocker.  His sound is reminiscent of the 90′s grunge scene, but with a cleaned up front man whose ear to ear smile let’s you know they are having the time of their life.  It’s loud, it’s energetic, and it’s fun.  You should add a reminder to go see Ty and company at Exit/In on September 21st.

Wye Oak is a Baltimore, MD based two piece.  Jenn Wasner plays guitar and croons with ethereal gothy vocals while Andy Stack somehow manages to play keyboard with one hand and drums with the other while singing backup vocals.  Truly impressive to see live.  I’ve been waiting to see an announcement for them in Nashville, but it looks like their current tour won’t take them closer than Atlanta, GA or Ashville, NC.  I’ll keep my eyes open for you, and let you know when they make it through.

Thao & Mirah & tUnE-yArDs

Thao (last name: Nguyen, but you will rarely hear the full name…. sort of like a Brazilian footballer) is best known for her work with her band, The Get Down, Stay Down.  The hyper-active guitarist and lead singer is originally from Falls Creek, VA, but is currently living and working out of San Francisco, CA.  Her style is sweet but strong and crazy energetic.  I saw her perform with The Get Down, Stay Down in San Francisco several years ago in support of her album We Brave Bee Stings And All, and the crowd was electric from the performance.  Probably the funniest comment/compliment I heard that night (and, maybe, at any show I have ever seen) was from a couple in front of me.  The girl leaned into her boyfriend, and said, “She’s awesome.  You can totally sleep with her.”  Only in San Francisco.  Her discography includes three albums and a daytrotter session for her acclaimed poppy, fun album We Brave Bee Stings And All.  A song from that album is below.

Beat (Health, Life, and Fire)

Mirah (Yom Tov Zeitlyn…. see above about Brazilian footballers) is a highly acclaimed singer/songwriter with an impressive discography.  Originally from Philadelphia, Mirah currently lives in San Francisco, and continues to create music within the always, but even more so in the past couple of years, up and coming Bay Area music scene.  Below is a track from her 2001 album, Advisory Committee.

The Garden

TuNe-yArDs is the musical project of Montreal’s Merrill Garbus (she recently relocated to Oakland, CA).  She is signed with 4AD records, and has released two full length albums (BiRd-BrAiNs and w h o k i l l).  Both records have received significant acclaim, and recognize Garbus for her masterful work as a solo artist with a multitrack recorder (she could have been included on our previous post about solo artists creating huge sounds with multitrack recorders).  When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, voice, and electric bass.  Below is a track from her 2011 record w h o k i l l.

Gangsta

So, why am I telling you about all of this?  Well, Thao has recently teamed up with Mirah, and they brought in TuNe-yArDs for some production help, and have, in essence, created a female, Bay Area, pop, supergroup.  Thao + Mirah (the group’s moniker) has a self-titled debut album out on Kill Rock Stars, AND they will be coming through Nashville to play the Mercy Lounge on June 14th.  This will be your only chance to see them in Nashville, because none of these musicians are slated to play at Bonnaroo (though TuNe-yArDs was recently added to Bonnaroo’s sister festival, Outside Lands, in San Francisco).

Check out an original track from Thao + Mirah below, plus their fun cover of Love Is A Battlefield.
