Best Music of 2011 List (Nashville Shows edition)

We started this blog when I returned to Nashville in May of 2011.  Since then, I’ve been to see LOTS of shows and met lots of great people.  I’m excited about all the comments, emails, tweets, and facebook posts that we have gotten, and the general enthusiasm that people are showing us for our work to spotlight independent music here in Music City.  So, first off, I want to say THANKS for all your support and your continued interest, and secondly, we are looking forward to meeting more of you and continuing to grow in the coming year.  We are currently working with web dudes to get a better blog with more features up for you (and for us!).

Ok, thank you’s aside, you know that there are tons of “Best of” lists that are coming out this time of year.  You can check out the lists from Paste, Rough Trade, Stereogum, Gorilla vs. Bear here, and you just know that a ton more list-makers are waiting for The Black Keys new record to drop tomorrow.

As I have been going through all of these lists, I’ve noticed just how many of these bands have played Nashville this year.  So, I broke the initial lists down, and made my own list of “Best of” artists that have played the Music City since I started this blog in May.  There are 65 of them (I think), and I have linked back to the pages where I talked about them.  There is also a list of another 10 records that I really dug this year, that are still worth some of your time even though they didn’t play the Music City.  Let me know if you think I left anything off, and get in touch…  (update: The list keeps growing… I initially forgot about Black Lips Arabia Mountain, Givers In Light, and Dawes Nothing Is Wrong).

Thanks again for your support, and I can’t wait to see you at a bunch more shows next year!

New & Notes for Nashville – December edition

Once again, I can’t even open a webpage on my computer because I have so many tabs open.  So, it’s time for me to clean off the desk.  Here’s what I’m throwing into the files today.  I have enough to do a Nashville edition and a not-so-Nashville edition.  I’ll break those into two for you.

The Black Keys

We all know that the Black Keys are releasing their new record El Camino on Tuesday December 6th.  You’ve probably heard the already released “Lonely Boy” and “Run Right Back” from that Black Friday Record Store Day release.  They are giving you a sneak peek of another three tracks from El Camino that you can listen to right now for the cost of an email address.  They are kicking off a couple of months of touring with a Saturday Night Live appearance this weekend (12/3) and then will be performing at Webster Hall on the day the record releases (12/5).  This show will be streamed live to us internetters.  I’m to lazy to embed that player, so you can head over to Paste Magazine to get more deets on that one.

Heartless Bastards

The Austin, Texas rock band Heartless Bastards are set to follow up their bad ass 2009 release The Mountain in early 2012.  The album, titled Arrow, will be released on Fat Possum Records, and will have a subsequent supporting tour.  We already have a date for Nashville… Saturday March 3rd at Mercy Lounge.  Grab your tickets here, and have a listen to the track “Parted Ways” from Arrow below.  If you want to download it for yourself, head over to Stereogum.

The Ryman Auditorium App

Now that the Ryman has a smartphone app we can all rest assured that…. umm, we can. umm.  We can order tickets on our phones.  umm.  We can “check in” when we get there to tell our friends that we got tickets and they didn’t.  umm.  We can look at old Hatch prints.

I kid.  It’s pretty neat and it’s free, so why not check it out.  I think the opening screen alone is worth downloading it, it feels like your phone is a tiny Ryman and you are the headliner.  Apparently, you can scan this thing below, and your amazing cellular deveice will whisk you away to the store where you can download The Ryman.  Whoa, it worked!

tUnE-yArDs

Man, I really hate typing that name, but I love her music.  Her show at Exit/In at the end of September was pHeNoMeNaL (hypocrite).  Well, if you missed it, you can check out a Tiny Desk Concert from NPR with Merrill, her band, and lots of pedals and drums and stuff packed into a tiny office at NPR’s studios in DC.  You can head over to NPR’s website to watch, listen, download… whatever you please.

Galactic

Galactic started college in New Orleans at the same time I did, and I’d often roll into see them playing at someone’s house under their original moniker “Galactic Prophylactic” (which I am honestly still partial to).  They were all transplants to New Orleans, but quickly took the soul and funk of that city under their wing.  It’s pretty awesome to me that those guys are still going so strong.  I’m stoked to check out their new record Carnivale Electricos (due out on February 21, 2012), and then, oh then, we will get to funk out to them on tour.  They’ll be in Nashville on April 18th 2012 at Mercy Lounge.  Don’t freak out, I’ll remind you again when the time gets closer.

More Nashville video sessions

In the spirit of Live and Reel (and numerous other national outlets… NPR, Daytrotter, La Blogotheque, etc.), Nashville Cream has been recording video sessions that they’ve dubbed “Conference Calls”.  I think they just started earlier this year, and performers, so far, have included Tristen, Pujol, Evan P. Donohue, The Features, and Colour Revolt.  This weeks release is Casa Castile.  You can check out the sessions at this link.  I don’t know how this slipped under my radar, but I am impressed.  Bravo, fellas…

Pixies Tribute “Is She Weird” with Bobby Bare Jr., Exit/In, Tonight In Nashville

This is, I think, the second installment of Is She Weird in Nashville.  I was able to check out the inaugural installment over at The 5 Spot back in July (man, that seems like forever ago), and it was awesome.  If you don’t remember, you should check out the post that I wrote up about it back then.  Whoa, I just went back and looked at that post, and it was pretty short.  I know I wasn’t all that busy back in July… Anyway, let’s say you didn’t click up there, then I’ll tell you that you are looking at a straight up cover party that could include anything out of the Pixies catalogue.  If you are a fan of the Pixies, you are going to love this.

The performers are no slouches either.  You get Nashville’s “have guitar will travel” roustabout Bobby Bare Jr., former Trail of Dead drummer Doni Schroader and Forget Cassettes’ Beth Cameron.  The latter are now playing in a band called Eliza The Arrow.

I don’t normally write up covers, but I am a fan of both the Pixies and BBJ… so, it just feels like another fun show for me.

Things get rolling with opener Rind around 8pm, and tickets are $7 at the Exit/In website.  It’ll be fun.  I even attached a youtoober of the song “Is She Weird” below to get you in the mood.  Get out and see some live music!

The Alabama Shakes, Mercy Lounge, Tonight In Nashville

I am not sure there has been a bigger buzz band in the past 6 months than The Alabama Shakes.  The origins of this Athens, ALABAMA four piece began two years ago when Heath Fogg called on Brittany Howard to open a set for his own band.  Who knows what happened to Fogg’s original band, but everyone in the buzzosphere knows what happened when Howard and Fogg recruited Steve Johnson and Zac Cockrell to create The Shakes (later to become The Alabama Shakes).  They created a sound that is so old and familiar that it is totally different from what we get these days with all the electro-do-it-yourself-from-your-bedroom loopy multi-instrumental wizards.  It’s a sound that harks back to 60′s motown played by a garage rock band.

So, let’s talk a little about all the buzz that this band has created.  I first heard about The Alabama Shakes from Justin Gage at Aquarium Drunkard during his weekly blog radio broadcast back in July.  In today’s Nashville Scene, Jewly Hight reveals that Gage learned about them from Seth Riddle (former Rough Trade staffer and current GM of Kings of Leon imprint Serpents & Snakes) when he heard them in the backyard at Groove Records in East Nashville for a Record Store Day performance back in April.  Riddle says, “After they started playing I was just kind of pinching myself, because it’s really rare that you see a band that strikes that chord with you and you’ve never heard of ‘em… Usually, you’ve heard a little buzz about ‘em, and they’ve got their website up, they’ve got some digital files up.  This band, they didn’t have anything.  Nothing.  There was nothing there.  I don’t think they had a Facebook page.”  Since then, The Alabama Shakes have blown up.  They had to skip out on an 8 off 8th session back in October to join in on the CMJ Festival madness of New York City, where they were spotted and admired by The New York Times’ art beat writer Jon Parales.  Before you know it, Patterson Hood signs them on to open for The Drive-By-Truckers tour.  KEXP in Seattle caught up with them and named “Hold On” the song of the day.  They have since signed with ATO Records, and they are in the initial lineup released from South By Southwest for 2012.  Talk about a zero to hero year, damn.

Each generation has to relearn the music of the past.  As an artist, you might hear something 20, 30, or 40 years old that inspires and molds your creative process.  We’ve seen this cyclical pattern over and over again (i.e. the resurgence of surf and grunge music in the past few of years).  Well, we might just be catching the first wave of the resurgence of an updated 60′s R&B.  I’ve attached a player below with their self-titled EP.  You can grab your own copy of “You Ain’t Alone” at the Aquarium Drunkard site, and “Hold On” is available at the KEXP site.  You can also just buy the EP for $4 at their bandcamp site, or through the player below.

Things get started tonight at 8pm at Mercy Lounge, and you can grab your $10 tickets here.  Don’t roll in at the crack of 10pm either,  because Nashville’s Jessica Breanne & The Electric Hearts and another Alabama band Planet Ink are both pretty bad ass to have in the opening slots.

As it says in The Alabama Shakes bio (It’s in all caps there too), PREPARE YOUR EYELIDS. TAPE THEM OPEN SO YOUR EYES BELIEVE. PREPARE YOUR EAR HOLES BECAUSE WE WILL BE COMING FOR THEM BRAINS.  Don’t miss this.  Get out and see some live music tonight.

Bonna-rumors: Who’s gonna headline 2012?

Pre-sale tickets started (and sold out) two days ago for the 2012 Bonnaroo festival.  This got my rumor wheels turning. I’ve been thinking non-stop about who might be headlining next year, and I’m finally just going to publish this so I can move on to something else.  So, let’s start discussing some possibilities.  Let me know if you think you have an idea.  Let’s have a bit of fun on this cold day.  Who do you think is going to be the headliner?

Radiohead?  They announced a North American tour recently.  They have been long rumored as the headliner for this year’s Coachella festival, and their tour schedule looks like it could work out for that one.  Bonnaroo looks pretty good for Radiohead’s current tour schedule, as well.  Though, it’s pretty rare that Coachella and Bonnaroo have the same headliners.  Radiohead last played Bonnaroo in 2006.  If you google “Radiohead + Bonnaroo”, you can find a page that has Radiohead listed with an apparently updated 2012 page.  Of course, you can do the same thing for Eminem with the same results, and I seriously doubt he is coming back for a second straight year.  Radiohead’s bio also hasn’t been updated since In Rainbows.  I’m not saying it won’t happen, but I doubt this means anything.

Wanna go big, and take a guess that Black Sabbath might make a headlining appearance?  After years of speculation, it’s been reported that they are going to have a new record and an upcoming tour.  I mean, we haven’t heard any real updates and it’s already December, but I’m not saying it won’t happen… legs on this one?  They did bring Metallica down there in 2008!?!

The Cure?  This could be a big one if the reunion continues.  Here’s a write up to their 11/23 show in LA.  The Cure haven’t played Bonnaroo.  I think this one might really have some legs.

What about the Red Hot Chili Peppers?  They’ve just announced the first few North American dates in their reunion tour (minus guitarist John Frusciante).  There’s even a facebook fan page begging for this to happen.  I’d say there is a good chance of this one, though I wonder if the California boys will be drawn to the Southern California stages of Coachella instead?  Furthermore, RHCP will be on tour in Europe in June, and, while there is a two and a half week window open between tour stops in Switzerland and Russia, I’m not sure they would make the trip back across the pond for a Bonnaroo set.  Who knows though… I don’t think they’ve ever played The ‘Roo.

No Doubt?  It’s one of those picks that makes you think just because of the reunion factor, and that would certainly fit the bill for a festival like Coachella given their penchant for snagging up reuniting bands.  I don’t remember them ever playing at Bonnaroo.  Am I wrong here?  What do you think?

The Raconteurs?  They got back together this fall, and rocked out at The Ryman recently before hitting a few of the smaller festivals.  They last played The Roo’ in 2008.  The Nashville boys are still “uncertain” if there will be a new Raconteurs record.  If there is a new record, you could bet that a Bonnaroo slot would be beneficial for everyone involved. [updated] Jack White has been announced as the headliner of Sasquatch in support of his new solo record.  Brendan Benson is also releasing a new record, and could be performing at the fest too.  So, I guess there is still some evidence that the Nashville based Raconteurs could “meet up” at Bonnaroo.  This rumor is more likely to lean towards a Jack White solo set.

What if we go more reclusive?  Portishead and Jeff Mangum just came out of hiding to woo us for a hot second.  While I would give Portishead a nod to hold down some sort of headlining capability, I just couldn’t imagine Neutral Milk Hotel’s frontman up on What Stage on a Saturday night.  I don’t think either has performed at the festival before.

The Foo Fighters?  They would be a huge draw, and they are touring again.  Here’s a write up to their recent New York City show.  Do you think they could hold down a headlining set?

Bruce Springsteen just announced a new record and tour coming up, but that is very unlikely given he will be on tour in Italy during The ‘Roo this year.  It also might be a little too soon for him to return since his 2009 headlining set.

We all know that The Black Keys are releasing a new record this year (next week actually).  I’m not sure that they are big enough yet to handle the top billing yet.  They just played the opener for Eminem in 2011, so they might be another record out before they get the headlining nod.  Not that I wouldn’t be very excited if it happened.  Update: Since I first wrote this post, The Black Keys sold out Madison Square Garden in 15 minutes, and added another show the next day.  Maybe they don’t need another record before they headline Bonnaroo.

Beck?  Could we figure out a way to get Beck back on a stage somewhere?  I’ve heard that Beck is more interested in producing for others (see Thurston Moore and Stephen Malkmus this year) than he is in recording new Beck records.  I sure do like seeing  Beck perform though, so that would be fun.  I doubt there is any real credibility behind this suggestion other than my own personal desire.  Maybe, I am just looking for a reunion of the 2006 lineup with Beck and Radiohead.

Roger Waters and David Gilmour doing the Wall?  Unless they shoot down to the Farm on their day off between dates in Chicago and Louisville, this is highly unlikely.  Not to mention that huge stage set up isn’t really conducive to rapid turnover festival lineups.  Another side note, they are playing in Nashville 9 days after the fest, and these huge festivals usually have radius clauses stating that you can’t play with XX miles within XX days.  Of course, I guess you would waive that for something this big if they could pull it off.

The Beach Boys (updated) recently announced a new record and tour to celebrate their 50th anniversary.  So far, they only have a few dates confirmed (Jazz Fest in April and a couple in Germany in August).  You would have to imagine that they aren’t announcing the rest of their tour until the summer festival lineups become public.  This would be one of the best Sunday night sets ever.

Van Halen (updated) just announced a massive North American tour with Diamond Dave.  I would imagine that this would be a big draw.  They are playing a string of dates through the South in the spring (Nashville on 4/27), and they will be out on the west coast in June.  However, there is a week break between the San Jose show on 6/5 and Anaheim on 6/12.  So, I guess that would be enough time for them to shoot back to the area for a Bonnaroo set.

I saw somewhere that Tim McGraw & Kenny Chesney are touring?  Is that right?  I wonder if they will make an appearance?  ummm….  I guess we also have to consider Coldplay too, sigh.  I didn’t even look up their tour dates, because I don’t care.  It would be interesting to think about Bonnaroo dropping the country dudes in on Sunday evening with an unprecendented single day ticket sale for that day only.  Talk about raking in some cash!

Of course, Bonnaroo always rounds it out with a little something for everyone and TONS of up and coming acts.  You also know there is going to be some hip-hop highlights (Jay-Z & Kanye? or OFWGKTA?) at some point.  You know there are going to be late night DJ sets (M83?).  And, you know that they are going to have a chilled out Sunday closer (insert pretty much any jam band you can think of here).

Do you have any ideas on headliners?  Man, this post could literally go on forever (I just thought about Madonna with MIA and Nicki Minaj).  It is fun to think about hot, summer nights filled with music and good times during these short, cold days though.  Discuss.
