Bonnaroo’s Roo Clue Number 4!

Sorry I’ve dropped the ball on keeping up with these. I was a little bit out of commission last week. To make up for it, this week we’ll be playing catchup. Check back for a new Roo Clue solution every day!

For Roo Clue 4, Bonnaroo decided that we weren’t fit for interpreting the imagery from their videos anymore, so they fed us the actual text along with a (rather annoying) weeping tree:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbUKIvgHLCM]

The video, along with clues from Radio Bonnaroo and the Bonnaroo app, make up our fourth haiku:

Oh, the weeping tree,
But beauty in the moon’s glow,
Peace before the cut.

Here’s the thing about these clues: they have no real rhyme or reason for how they’re set up (though their format and delivery is consistent). They could be hinting a very small or moderately large band. They could be alluding to an album or a video or random trivia or the band’s name itself. Some of them are fairly singular in the clue they’re hinting; some are hinting multiple, more obscure pieces. Some are very, very literal to the point of almost seeming too easy. Some require a bit more interpretation. The mistake I (and many others) often make, is trying to tackle each clue with the same mindset as the previous clue, then reaching for a solution that doesn’t quite fit.

I believe the answer to this particular clue to be one of the easier, more literal ones. Though some speculation has included Pink Floyd members Roger Waters or David Gilmour, together or separately, or even The Flaming Lips covering Pink Floyd, none of those make perfect sense. They also seem like over-thinking or wishful thinking. Another theory floating around is Paul McCartney, but even if the clue supported it, there’s zero chance of Bonnaroo spilling their biggest headliner this way. This clue still might be alluding to one of the biggest bands hinted yet, however, and I think the video below is the solution:

Yep, I’m calling this one for MGMT and if that video isn’t convincing enough, here’s why:

  • The clue is a literal description of the synopsis of the “Electric Feel” video (above). There’s a willow tree, beautiful imagery in the moon’s glow, and peace before the moon is cut apart, at which point the video descends into chaos.
  • “Peace before the cut”- The song “Pieces of What” comes directly before “Of Moons, Birds & Monsters” on Oracular Spectacular.
  • “Of Moons, Birds & Monsters” has “moon” right in the title and emphases the word “cut” in its lyrics.
  • MGMT are prepping to release a new album, they haven’t played Bonnaroo since 2008, and they will certainly be making festival rounds for 2013.

So there you go, I’m calling this one solved. Bonnaroo just keeps getting more and more exciting with every announcement! Can June hurry up and get here already?

Pink Floyd week on Jimmy Fallon, Final Day, Pearl Jam’s “Mother”

All week, we’ve been following Late Night’s Jimmy Fallon, who is hosting a series of artists this week to perform covers of Pink Floyd songs. (This is the last time you have to ever read this paragraph.) I guess he thinks anyone that is up watching his show is likely stoned, and he wants to see if he can get a nation of stoned spirit-fingers going on the Cheetos covered couches of America (or more likely he is promoting this week’s release of the remastered Pink Floyd box set) Regardless, it’s a chance to see some pretty big names do Pink Floyd covers. (I am tired of reading that same intro over and over again!)

Unfortunately, I can’t figure out how to embed the videos anymore, so I am back to stealing from others.

The Shins kicked it off Monday with “Breathe”, and Tuesday brought the Foo Fighters along with Roger Waters himself (which is kinda cheating in this little karaoke contest) to perform “In The Flesh”. Wednesday night was MGMT’s version of “Lucifer Sam” with a cameo by Bradford Cox (of Deerhunter/Atlas Sound fame), and Thursday was Nashville country crooner Dierks Bentley performing “Wish You Were Here”.

On last night’s finale of Pink Floyd week, Pearl Jam covered “Mother”.  It’s always been one of my favorite songs from The Wall, and I honestly couldn’t think of a better person than Eddie Vedder to finish off this week.  It was the climax and denouement of a really fun week.  Bravo, fellas!

I wanna give a shout out to the Late Night Crew. They did a great job.  It was a really fun, thanks!

Pink Floyd week on Jimmy Fallon, Day 4, Dierks Bentley’s “Wish You Were Here”

We are still following Late Night’s Jimmy Fallon who is hosting a series of artists this week to perform covers of Pink Floyd songs. I guess he thinks anyone that is up watching his show is likely stoned, and he wants to see if he can get a nation of stoned spirit-fingers going on the couches of America (or more likely he is promoting this week’s release of the remastered Pink Floyd box set) Regardless, it’s a chance to see some pretty big names do Pink Floyd covers. (are you guys tired of reading that same intro over and over again?!?!)

The Shins kicked it off Monday with “Breathe”, and Tuesday brought the Foo Fighters along with Roger Waters himself (which is kinda cheating in this little karaoke contest) to perform “In The Flesh”. Wednesday night was MGMT’s version of “Lucifer Sam” with a guest cameo by Bradford Cox (of Deerhunter/Atlas Sound fame). And, now up, is Nashville country crooner Dierks Bentley performing “Wish You Were Here” on Thursday night. I finally figured out how to embed the video on here, but you’ll have to entertain yourself during the 30 second ad at the beginning.

The finale is tonight (Friday), and will be Pearl Jam’s take of “Mother”.

Looks like all you stoners have a pretty cool week of music lined up from your Cheetos covered couches this week. Assuming, that is, you don’t forget.

I’ll repost this each day with updated links…. assuming, that is, I don’t forget.

Pink Floyd week on Jimmy Fallon, Day 3, MGMT does “Lucifer Sam”

Well, last night was MGMT’s version of “Lucifer Sam” with a cameo from Deerhunter and Atlas Sound front man Bradford Cox. WoOoOoOoO…. those bubbles are so pretty!!!

Stay tuned for one of them Nashville country fellars, Dierks Bentley doing “Wish You Were Here” on Thursday. The finale will be Pearl Jam’s take of “Mother” on Friday.
