fun. Streams New Song for HBO’s ‘Girls’ Soundtrack

If you haven’t heard fun. by now, you must be living under a rock (or you don’t own a tv- seriously, did I miss the memo where advertisers were only allowed to use songs by fun. or Lana Del Rey last year?). For the uninitiated, fun. might seem like a radio rock construct that appeared of out nowhere (and yes, they did blow up quickly thanks to some well-timed television placements- I personally saw them go from performing for about 50 people to 5,000 people over the course of a year), but they do sincerely have the cred, the chops, and put in all of the work to justify their success. The core members of fun. were formerly in The Format, Anathallo, and Steel Train- three fantastic bands that never quite achieved the commercial success they deserved. The auxiliary members of fun. were/are in Straylight Run, Breaking Pangaea, Seahorses, Koufax, Waking Ashland, and Kelpie. That list alone should be fairly indicative of just how eclectic’s the band’s musical influences are. Although their latest album Some Nights has been getting all of the attention (and the numerous Grammy nods), the band released a fantastic debut called Aim and Ignite several years prior, and spent years relentlessly touring until they exploded onto the mainstream radar.

Fueled by Ramen, fun.’s label, is about to drop the soundtrack for HBO’s breakout show Girls. Including songs from a diverse range of artists like Fleet Foxes, Belle & Sebastian, Santigold (you can hear her contribution here), and Grouplove, the label also decided to include a fun. track that wasn’t quite finished in time to make the cut for Some Nights. Titled “Sight of the Sun,” the song is more than just a throwaway tack or a b-side; it’s one of fun.’s stronger contributions to this release cycle. It’s one of the group’s more reserved songs, but still chock-full of the dense harmonies and instrumentation we’ve come to expect from fun. You can stream it below:

(The Rolling Stone premiere stream is currently not embeddable, hopefully this one stays up!)

fun. is performing February 16 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, however the show sold out almost immediately. If you’re one of the lucky few who managed to get tickets, you’re in for a treat! Otherwise, keep your fingers crossed for a repeat Bonnaroo appearance this year!

New Music Releases 12/6/11

This will probably be one of the last weeks of any notable new music releases this year before the holidays start.  Most everyone is talking about the Black Keys release of El Camino today, but there are a few others that you might want to consider as well.  I’ve given you a run down of what I think might be ear-worthy.  I tried to link each one to a credible review with some music that you can stream as well.

Head over to your local record store to do some holiday shopping for the music lovers on your list.

The Black Keys – El Camino (listen to the full record here)
Amy Winehouse – Lioness: Hidden Treasures (listen here)
The Dead Milkmen – The King In Yellow
Girls – Lawrence [single]
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – The Magic of Youth

Olafur Arnalds – Living Room Songs (listen & download)
Tender Forever – Where Are We From
The Roots – undun

Get To Know: Papa

Did you see Girls perform last month at Mercy Lounge?  If so, I hope you got there early enough to see the opener, Papa.  These guys were awesome.  It was a high energy kind of soul music packed with pop hooks that you could immediately tell was the musical darling of drummer Darren Weiss.  The funny thing was trying to place him.  He looked so familiar to me.  It wasn’t until I saw Girls that I understood that I seen Darren and guitarist, Evan Weiss, hours earlier during the live set that Girls webcast from Grimey’s in Nashville (I wish that video was still available).

In speaking with Darren, I’ve learned more about Papa the band.  They are a Los Angeles based four piece that are friends, collaborators, and currently touring with Girls; and they are honestly building quite a reputation.  I’ve seen a lot of tweets coming through from those with clout in the music world bragging about Papa putting on a really great set before Girls.  Papa is comprised of drummer Darren Weiss and his longtime friend and collaborator, bassist Danny Peasant.  Throw in some funky keys and Darren’s big brother, guitarist Evan, and you have an R&B-inspired, rocking good time.  You wanna know how much fun it is?  When I was walking up to Mercy Lounge that night, I saw Darren doing jumping jacks in the backstage windows.  You know you’re getting pumped for a high energy set when you are doing some backstage jumping jacks.

Papa is currently on tour with Girls, and Darren and Evan will continue to be for a quite a while as the Girls tour continues through Europe and Japan.  But, Darren has told me that this is not a side project for him.  He is as passionate about Papa as Christopher and JR are about Girls, and he is already looking forward to getting back and starting to work on a full length release for Papa.  A tour is likely to happen after that, maybe as soon as early 2012.  It will probably be a while before you see them here in Nashville again, but I’ll keep my eyes open and let you know when they do come through.

Their debut EP, entitled A Good Woman Is Hard To Find, released today.  I have a link to the EP below so you can listen before you buy.  Check it out, I think you’ll dig it.

Saturday news and notes

I’m taking the weekend to catch up on stuff…. and to relax and watch football….. and to revel in how awesome Papa, Nobunny, and Girls were last night.  But, I wouldn’t want to leave you guys hanging with nothing to do.  So, I’ll let you look through some of the stuff that is sitting on my desk. Have a great weekend, and rest up for Soundland next week!

Daytrotter kicks ass…

Unknown Mortal Orchestra dropped their first daytrotter session this week.  They are the product of New Zealand’s Ruban Nielson (currently living in Portland).  It’s a fuzzy psychedelic pop sound that has been heavily blogged about since they hit the scene in 2010.  “Ffunny Ffriends” is the first single that dropped from their self-titled debut.  You can hear it below.

Trash or Keeper, you decide…

Mister Loveless was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Walnut Creek, in 2003.  Since their formation, they’ve released an album, two EPs, a 7-inch, and are prepping to release their latest album, Grow Up.  They’ve had an impressive live career, opening up for Black Francis, The Wedding Present and in October they’re opening up for Peter Bjorn and John at San Francisco’s Popscene.  These guys have been hustling hard for the past 8 years and the buzz is growing to a point that seems to be paying off.  One review I read said, “Luckily their music doesn’t exclude anybody, so there aren’t any limitations for these guys.”  Well, I’ve listened to this quite a bit, and sometimes it excludes me and sometimes it doesn’t.  You decide for yourself.

Moving along….

Nashville Cream is reporting that Betty’s Bar and Grill will turn into a run down dive bar starting tomorrow.  You can enjoy the last night of it being a progressive music spot tonight with performances by R. Stevie Moore and Action!  Also, we’ll be on the lookout for where Leslie Keffer will land, as a new awesome venue might appear soon.

Pictures, pictures, pictures….

Lots of great pictures and a typically awesome write up from The Cream about the Raconteurs & JEFF show.

The band that would be fun to write up this weekend, but I don’t have the time to write up this weekend….

Swans at Mercy Lounge – Saturday, 9/17, 8pm.

Girls in-store performance at Grimey’s to be Webcast!!!

How rad is that? I didn’t even know what to think when I read that. I expect Grimey’s to be overrun tomorrow for Girls in-store performance.  So, how do you let even more people see it?  You webcast it to the whole world, that’s how!!!  And, do you want a bonus, the session will be pressed onto Vinyl, and will be sold at participating record stores that host the video!  This is so innovative, and I, sincerely, take my hat off to the folks over at Grimey’s.

So, here’s what you need to do.  Listen to the new Girls album,  Father, Son, and Holy GhostBuy your tickets to see Girls perform at Mercy Lounge on Friday, September 16th.  Tune in Friday, September 16th at 5pm (Central Time) to see the live in-store performance.  You can always head over to Grimey’s website to see the performance, and tons of other cool stuff.  I also attached the webcast player below to take some of the load off the servers over at Grimey’s.
