TWiN | This Weekend In Nashville | 2/15 – 2/17

Here we go again.  It’s another weekend in Nashville, and your hard working asses need to get moving to celebrate.  If you are a regular follower of this rag, you’d find it hard to think we would even know that anything other than East Nashville Underground is going on over at The East Room this weekend, but we do live in Music City where there is always more music than possible to believe happening.  We hope you all have a safe and happy post-valentine’s day weekend, and that you all get out to see some live music.

Friday

East Nashville Underground’s Winter 2013 season gets underway with a particularly spectacular lineup.  You get some No Country faves with Vinyl Thief, All Them Witches, Alanna Royale, Machines Are People Too, Magnolia Sons, Cult Logic, & DJ Rate from Boom Bap.  You can check out our full Friday night preview here.  Things get started around 9 and run until the wee hours.  $15 tickets for the night (or $25 for the weekend) are available at the door, and I would recommend that you get there early before this sells out.  Did I mention that you drink for free at this thing?

If you’re feeling nostalgic about high school, yet sarcastic at the same time, perhaps it’s time to find your worst/cheesiest formal wear and attend the Worst Winter Formal. It’ll be held tonight at the 615 Design space of Erica Edmonson, located at 1015 W. Kirkland Ave in East Nashville. Music will be provided by the smooth and cool Patrick Baker, Blown Stag, and The Stateside Menace.  It’s $5 to get in, and punch will be provided for $2. Dressing in your worst formal wear is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. Check out more event info here.

Saturday

East Nashville Underground installed your hangover last night, so why not let them service that same hangover on Saturday morning with mimosas, breakfast pastries, and more music.  The Saturday Day Show is no joke this season with the likes of The Static Trees, Jon Byrd, Joshua, Waterfall Wash, K.S. Rhoads, Colorfeels, Frances & The Foundation, and Hanzelle.  Get to know all of these bands over at our full Saturday day preview here.  If you have your full weekend wristband, you are already in, otherwise, you can also grab tickets at the door for $10.

Hopefully, you won’t wear yourself out in the afternoon, because the East Nashville Underground finale is not to be missed.  Check it: The Golden Spurs, COIN, Tesla Rossa, James Wallace & The Naked Light, Moon Taxi, The Wans, and DJ That Guy.  Seriously, if you miss this, you probably have no soul.  Check the full preview with lots of players and music and shit right here.  The grand drunken send off begins at 9pm, and tickets are still $15 at the door.  If your liver is still accepting donations, the beer will still be flowing for this event.

If you’re looking for a change of pace after spending Friday night and Saturday day at ENU (or the party sells out before you can snag a wristband) – there is a very worthy option on the West side with the QDProm happening at the Mercy Lounge. Jessika is super stoked about this one because it combines her well-documented love of Ponychase with her heightened sense of nostalgia! The Queer Dance Party is the brainchild of some pretty awesome local folks that know that the great equalizer is the universal need to get down (proof: Harlem Shake). The monthly QDP has scooted over from the 5 Spot to Cannery Row for this special event that will feature DJs per their usual happenings plus Ponychase (yay!), Tipper Whore (dropping their new record that night, too, woohoo!), AND “Special Guests” playing some very recognizable tunes. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Tipper Whore, they “make songs about drinking, one night stands, how hell is a party, doing cocaine with Ke$ha… and the likes.” And who doesn’t want to hear that? Exactly. So if you’re over 18, you can party like a prom star starting at 8pm. There will be a photo booth for mugging and there’s even promise of free party favors for the first 250 folks with advance tickets ($8 adv, $10 DOS) — snag ‘em here. So be you gay, bi, les, trans, poly, asexual, intersex, or questioning – queer people UNITE in your best awkward formal attire and getcha’ some. (Straight people with good taste and decent moves welcome).

Also happening Saturday, the Grammy-winning, platinum record-selling, unstoppable indie pop machine that is fun. are performing at The Ryman Auditorium. This one’s been sold out for quite awhile, so if you don’t already have tickets, you’ll end up paying a pretty penny to snag some secondhand. Philip wanted to bring you some good news though: fun. already have ANOTHER Nashville show planned for 9/22 at The Woods Amphitheater at Fontanel. The info and ticket links for The Woods can be found here. It’s still a ways out, so you’ve got plenty of time to jump on the fun. bandwagon between now and then!

Sunday

If you’re not still nursing a post-ENU hangover Sunday, or if you had such a blast at the festival, you just need one more show to conclude your weekend, Philip thinks you have to check out Jukebox the Ghost with Matt Pond and The Lighthouse and the Whaler at Mercy Lounge! Brooklyn indie rockers Jukebox the Ghost have toured pretty extensively, and they’ve got the incredible and high-energy live show to match. On top of that, their latest album, Safe Travels, is their strongest and most personal yet. Supporting artist Matt Pond dropped the “PA” from his name recently and just debuted a more focused, energetic sound with his new album. There’s never been a better time to catch him! Finally, poppy indie folk openers The Lighthouse and the Whaler have a knack for crafting dense, melodic, and heartfelt pop tunes with a folky yet often very dance-ready backbone. They’re the perfect compliment to an already fun lineup! The show starts at 8PM and you can still grab tickets here.

fun. Announce Another Nashville Show | Grab Your Tickets NOW!

Not one of the lucky few (thousand) who grabbed a ticket to fun.‘s upcoming Ryman Auditorium show next week before it sold out? Well, it’s your lucky day because the “We Are Young” trio have already announced their NEXT tour and Nashville once again made the cut! This time, the group will be performing at Music City’s brand new outdoor amphitheater: The Woods at Fontanel, Sunday September 22 (I can’t believe we’re talking about September already). Located just 10 minutes north of downtown, The Woods can accommodate 4,500 guests, and (for this show at least) appears to be all general admission.

fun_590

Still, with hit after hit, a recently-certified platinum record (now THAT’s an impressive feat for a rock band these days), and a likely sweep at this weekend’s Grammy Awards, this show is basically sure to sell out. Tickets aren’t onsale to the general public until next Saturday (2/16), but we’ve got the low-down on how to snag your tickets RIGHT NOW. Just head to this link and use to password ‘SOMENIGHTS’ in the presale field, and you’re good to go!

If you’re one of the many, many fun. fans who jumped onboard after ‘Some Nights’ and aren’t even aware of the group’s first album, do yourself a favor and give it spin. This is the video for one of their earlier singles:

[youtube=http://youtu.be/rCisO0YCjaI]

Opening the show are Canadian indie rock duo Tegan and Sara. Their just-released brand new album, Heartthrob, is already an early contendor for one of the best of 2013. It’s poppy, it’s layered but also heartfelt and full of substance- the latest in a fantastic career of releases. Tegan and Sara alone would be worth hitting the show for, but pairing them with fun. is just icing on the cake.

Here’s their new single “Closer:”

fun. and Tegan and Sara will be performing at The Woods Amphitheater at Fontanel, Sunday, September 22. Tickets are $41 ($51.50 after feeds), and can be purchased here now using the password ‘SOMENIGHTS’ in the presale field. You can find more information about the show here.

A message from the band, as posted on their site:

when we were kids the only thing that got us through most days was music. its why we started fall out boy in the first place. this isn’t a reunion because we never broke up. we needed to plug back in and make some music that matters to us.

the future of fall out boy starts now.

save rock and roll…

Here’s the text of our original post. We won’t update any of the info below (updates in red were added yesterday), but if any new information becomes available we’ll add it up top or in a separate post:

Last week, we brought word that seminal ’00s pop punk/pop rock band Fall Out Boy were set to reunite, as first reported by PropertyOfZack. News of the reunion quickly spread and was promptly dispelled by members of the band and by their manager. This is not the first time rumblings of a reunion have occurred since the band began a hiatus in late 2009. The news of this reunion was believed to be more than just a rumor, however, and was allegedly confirmed by multiple sources close to the band. The band’s denial was anticipated, and expected to continue until the official announcement was actually made.

fob_90210017

We’re incredibly excited to report, and can exclusively confirm from sources close to the band, that Fall Out Boy are officially set to announce their comeback tomorrow, Monday, February 4. As noticed and reported several days ago, the band is set to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday, February 13.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/d5WMaCtIUhA]

Here’s what we know for sure:

  • The announcement is coming tomorrow. Whether that means midnight, morning, or during the day is unknown. UPDATE: Chicago alternative radio station Q87.7 (known to be friendly to FOB) is making a secret major announcement Monday morning at 8AM (central). All of the members of Fall Out Boy are currently in Chicago. We’ll be listening in to provide you with live updates!
  • The Kimmel thing is a done deal. Will they perform a new song? Possible, but don’t hold your breath.
  • Fall Out Boy are set to play a secret show this Tuesday in New York City. We don’t know the time or location, hence the “secret.”
  • The band got together around 2 months ago to write and rehearse in LA. Whether new material will result from this is unknown. It’s unclear if the band spent any of this time recording, although we wouldn’t be surprised to see a new track materialize within the next few weeks.
  • There will definitely be a tour following the band’s reunion announcement. We’re unclear on the timeframe, scope, and whether or not it will officially be a Take This to Your Grave 10th Anniversary Tour. Smart money’s on a late spring start, extending through the summer.

Here’s what we think we know:

  • Rumblings of secret shows have been floating around for awhile. New York’s a sure thing, but it’s unclear if any other secret shows are planned. We’d bet on Chicago and/or LA, if they’re happening at all.
  • Take This to Your Grave 10 tour seems pretty likely, and we’ve heard talk about it, but it’s not confirmed just yet.
  • Word on the street is that the band is set to play the Skate and Surf festival in New Jersey. Everyone connected to the festival has been adamantly denying this fact though, so if it’s not announced within the next week or so, it might not be happening after all. Despite the denials, it still seems like a strong possibility, however. UPDATE: PropertyOfZack has pointed out that Skate and Surf is set to begin announcing more artists on Monday. Coincidence?
  • New music is expected to drop this year. Whether it’s a full record or not is unclear. We also don’t know the timeframe.
  • This comeback will last for the foreseeable future. Also unconfirmed, but we believe the band plans to make a proper return, not just a one-off tour or temporary reunion.
  • UPDATE: Some commenters on AbsolutePunk.net have also pointed out that the band fun. have been teasing a big announcement on Monday as well. Though this is quite possibly a coincidence, the similar appeal, label connection, and band’s relatively open schedule definitely makes the possibility of a joint tour seem not entirely out of the question.

We’ll update tomorrow once the band makes the formal announcement. As with any high-profile plans, details could change at the last minute. The wheels are definitely in motion though, and FOB fans can stop being cautiously optimistic and start being flat-out excited now!

Music on Television | 1.28-2.1

You may have noticed that we took another week off from this feature last week. Over half of the late night shows took a break, so I wanted to go ahead and wait for a week where we’ll have some decent recommendations for every single night.

I know it’s tough to keep track of all of the great performances on television each week, so every Monday I’ll bring you a roundup of the best artists (along with a bonus pick or two). So get those DVRs set (or remember to check Hulu the next day) for:

_

MONDAY (1/28)

DON’T MISSDivine Fits on Last Call with Carson Daly [NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c]Divine Fits are a supergroup featuring members of Spoon and Wolf Parade. If that’s not enough to pique your interest, give their debut album, A Thing Called Divine Fits, a spin- it’s amazing!

Here’s Divine Fits performing their single “My Love Is Real” live in Studio Q:

Bonus: David Byrne & St. Vincent on Late Show with David Letterman [CBS; 11:35PM/10:35c]Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne is no stranger to successful collaborations. His latest with St. Vincent proves to be one his most fun records in years!

_

TUESDAY (1/29)

DON’T MISSUltraista on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon [NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]Radiohead producer/Atoms of Peace member Nigel Godrich is the brains behind Ultraista. Joined by Beck/R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker and vocalist Laura Bettinson, the group’s pedigree is as strong as its self-titled debut.

You can check out the official video for the band’s song “Bad Insect” below:

Bonus: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on Late Show with David Letterman [CBS; 11:35PM/10:35c]Rapper Macklemore has been experiencing a huge comeback thanks to a little help from producer Ryan Lewis. Their recent release, The Heist, was one of the best independent hip hop records of 2012!

Bonus: Metric on Last Call with Carson Daly [NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c]: I’m still reeling from how great Metric’s fall performance at The Ryman was! Daly’s using pre-taped performances from late last year for this week, so hopefully we’ll get to see a song they haven’t performed on TV yet!

Bonus: Lisa Loeb on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno [NBC; 11:35PM/10:35c]: ’90s darling Lisa Loeb is finally returning to her roots after several years of releasing albums for children. Child Gilbert, guitarist of New Found Glory, produced her forthcoming comeback album. Weird, right?

_

WEDNESDAY (1/30)

DON’T MISSShovels & Rope on Late Show with David Letterman [CBS; 11:35PM/10:35c]: If you’re itching for a replacement for The Civil Wars, while the group figures out if they’re still a group, Shovels & Rope (and their debut O’ Be Joyful) might be just what you’re looking for. This will be the duo’s television debut!

Shovels & Rope will be performing at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville on 2/7/13. You can find more info here. Here’s the group performing a live radio version of  their single “Birmingham:”

Bonus: Bad Religion on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon [NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]: I’m already incredibly excited for the legendary punks to release their new album and perform in Nashville in March. A little extra television exposure is icing on the cake!

Bad Religion will be performing at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville on 3/20/13. You can find more info here.

Bonus: Ben Folds Five on Conan [TBS; 11PM/10c]: The return of Ben Folds Five and the nostalgia is brings is starting to wear a bit, especially after a so-so comeback album. Still, I used to love the group quite a lot and they’re always amazing performers!

Bonus: Shiny Toy Guns on Last Call with Carson Daly [NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c]: This is another leftover performance from last year edited into a new episode of Last Call, but with as many great songs as there are on STG’s latest, III, I don’t even mind!

_

THURSDAY (1/31)

DON’T MISSfun. on Conan [TBS; 11PM/10c]: It’s not like I need to tell you how great the past year has been for fun. If you weren’t one of the lucky folks who snagged tickets to see them in Nashville before the show sold out, you can keep your fingers crossed for Bonnaroo and tune into Conan.

fun. will be performing at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on 2/16/13. You can find more info hereHere’s the band’s performance of “We Are Young” from their stop at ‘Conan’ last year:

http://youtu.be/q5Il3whipgw

Bonus: Tegan and Sara on Jimmy Kimmel Live! [ABC; 11:35PM/10:35c]Tegan and Sara’s highly-anticipated new album Heartthrob is set to release tomorrow (1/29). The indie pop duo are also among the performers just announced to play Coachella this spring!

Bonus: Regina Spektor on Last Call with Carson Daly [NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c]This is another recycled footage performance, but I could watch Regina play songs from What We Saw from the Cheap Seats all day long. Tune in and relive her incredible recent Ryman performance.

_

FRIDAY (2/1)

DON’T MISSGrimes on Last Call with Carson Daly [NBC; 1:35AM/12:35c]: Tune in to see why I named Grimes one of the Best Nashville Shows of 2012. Even though this performance was filmed late last year, it’s still likely going one of the best you can catch all week!

Check out a fantastic performance from Grimes at last year’s Pitchfork Music Festival:
