Music on Television | 12.3-12.7

Here’s another new feature we’re trying out. The amount of great music on television each week can be hard to keep track of, so every Monday I’ll post a roundup of the best and most interesting performances coming up. I’ll be sure to give you one essential pick for each night, as well as a runner up or two if there’s a lot to great stuff to choose from.

With holiday schedules, the options might be a little sparse for December (for instance at least two shows are in reruns this week), so we’ll see how it goes!

Here are the best performances I think you should set your DVR (or check Hulu the next day) for:

_

MONDAY (12/3)

DON’T MISS: Punch Brothers on Conan [TBS; 11PM/10c]: The Americana/bluegrass rockers released a great album earlier this year and they just recently released a new EP called Ahoy! They always put on a great show!

If you missed their September performance at The Cannery Ballroom, you can catch them at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville in March. Here’s a taste of their live performance:

Bonus: Led Zeppelin (not performing) on Late Show with David Letterman [CBS; 11:35PM/10:35c]: Though they won’t be performing (that would be epic), the legendary rock band stops by Letterman tonight to plug their just-released Celebration Day DVD (which recently played for one night at the Belcourt)

_

TUESDAY (12/4)

DON’T MISS: Ke$ha on Conan [TBS; 11PM/10c]: Ok, not only is Ke$ha a catchy, guilty pleasure of mine, but hear me out. On her new album Warrior (out tomorrow), the singer again enlists the help of superproducers Max Martin and Dr. Luke as well the likes of Wayne Coyne (of The Flaming Lips), The StrokesIggy Pop, Patrick Carney (of The Black Keys), and Nate Ruess of fun. That not enough to pique your interest? The record is a pretty astoundingly solid pop with a decidedly rock and roll throwback vibe, and Ke$ha’s known for her weird, over the top performances. Also, she’s sort of a local whether we want to claim her or not. Don’t miss out on this one!

The first single from her new album:

_

WEDNESDAY (12/5)

DON’T MISS: Delta Spirit on Conan [TBS; 11PM/10c]: Folk-tinged California indie rockers Delta Spirit put out an incredible self-titled album earlier this year. An immensely talented band known for their tight and energetic live performances, their stop at Conan is one not to miss. Man, Conan is killing it this week, huh?

Here they are on ‘Kimmel’ a few months ago:

_

THURSDAY (12/6)

DON’T MISS: The Gaslight Anthem on Conan [TBS; 11PM/10c]: The Gaslight Anthem have had an amazing few years. After basically shedding their solidly punk beginnings and embracing a heartland rock, anthemic sound with punk undertones, the band have become critical darlings. Their latest record Handwritten (the followup to 2010′s universally revered American Slang) is fantastic and the band’s performance style is never anything below top-notch.

Here’s the a song from band’s excellent extended performance on ‘Letterman’ over the summer:

Bonus: Tanlines on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon [NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]: Tanlines are a little bit poppy, a little bit progressive, a little bit synthy, and a lot nostalgic. Think Vampire Weekend unchained. The band’s latest album is also really fantastic.

_

FRIDAY (12/7)

DON’T MISS: Big Boi on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon [NBC; 12:35AM/11:35c]: Though I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’d rather see the return of OutKast, a new solo outing from Big Boi is almost as good. Set to drop next week, if the rapper’s new record is half as good as his last one, it’ll make up for the wait!

The single from his new record ‘Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors’:

Bonus: Garbage on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno [NBC; 11:35PM/10:35c]: Alt-rock legends Garbage put out a pretty awesome new record earlier this year. Still riding the promotional trail for the release, you know ‘em, you love ‘em, and they’re sure to be great.

Hey DJ’s, Want A Paid Spot At Lollapalooza?

Lollapalooza just announced the launch of a completely revamped “Lolla Remix Throwdown” for 2012. Entrants to this year’s competition will have a chance to win a spot on Perry’s Stage at Lollapalooza, as well as prizes from Red Bull, Ableton, and Dubspot.

So, here’s the deets.  Between May 23rd and June 24th, artists can enter the contest by submitting their remix of ‘California’ by Lollapalooza artist Delta Spirit.  This year, three finalists will be selected by judge votes, and one ‘fan favorite’ will be selected by popular vote.  The voting period is between June 25th-29th, with the winners being announced on July 2nd.  The four finalists will then compete live at Evil Olive in Chicago on July 28th for a coveted prize package, which includes a slot at Lollapalooza on Perry’s stage.

The Lolla Remix Throwdown winner will receive a flight stipend of up to $500 plus lodging to spend one 9-hour day with an engineer in the Los Angeles Red Bull Studio, full Ableton Live 8, scholarship to Dubspot for the Mixing and Mastering Certificate program, $1,000 cash, Lollapalooza artist pass with access to catering and artist lounge, artist guest pass, hotel for four nights in Chicago for Lollapalooza weekend and promotion on the festival website. The three remaining finalists will each receive two festival tickets, Ableton Live intro and a $750 prize.

What have you got to lose?  Download the “California” mix here, and get after it.  I’d love to announce some local Nashville talent up there!

Some Great Shows Tonight In Nashville

It’s another fun weekend for music here in Nashville.  All you have to do is make a decision and get out to see some of it.  Friday is packed with performances from Delta Spirit w/ Waters at Cannery Ballroom; Pontiak w/ Luke Roberts at The End; Kansas Bible Company w/ Magnolia Sons, The Weakenders, & Peter Terry at 12th & Porter; Vintage Trouble at The 5 Spot; and Evan P Donohue w/ The Weeks, What Up English?, & Orbit Funeral at Exit/In.

Probably the biggest show of the night is Delta Spirit w/ Waters at Cannery Ballroom.  You remember Delta Spirit from that parking lot party they did last summer, right?  Well, they are back and playing indoors (which might be a good idea after that deluge last night) at The Cannery Ballroom tonight in support of their new self titled record which you can listen to in it’s entirety here.  We’ve also thrown up the new video for “California” from that record below.  This show also gives you your first shot around these parts to check out Waters which is the new band of Van Pierszalowski (formerly of Port O’Brien).  That debut LP Out In The Light got a lot of clicks in the blogosphere last year for good reason.  Click here to check out a few tracks from that record.

I just stumbled upon Vintage Trouble the other day, and I was listening while I did other things the other day.  I had to keep checking back on the old iTunes to make sure that I was still listening to the same band.  It’s a bluesy sort of soul thing that sounds about 40 years old.  I was honestly kind of shocked.  I really dig the Noisetrade thing, but there are so many singer/songwriters on there that I often times don’t pay that much attention.  Too many singer/songwriters in a day make you wanna go all Eliot Smith.  Anyway, I digress, per usual.  Check these guys out at Noisetrade where you can download the sampler for a cost of an email address.  Then you can head out to The 5 Spot to see what it is all about.

If you want a slightly more emotive evening then you should head over to The End (I know, that is weird to say) to see Pontiak with Nashville’s Luke Roberts.  We told you about Luke last fall and his new record The Iron Gates At Throop and Newport. Pontiak brings a bit more power to the emotive.  You can check out a video for his “Lions of Least” from Echo Ono below, and you can find more tracks to check out at their website.

If these don’t hit the spot for ya, then pick between No Country favorites Kansas Bible Company @ 12th and Porter or Evan P. Donohue w/ The Weeks, What Up English?, & Orbit Funeral at Exit/In.  Tickets for Delta Spirit and Waters will set you back about $15 bucks.  The rest of these are between $5 and $10.  All of them get started around 9pm.

Get out and see some live music tonight… and save some room for dessert with the psych rock explosion of White Denim on Sunday!

Delta Spirit and WATERS announce Nashville date

Delta Spirit returns to Nashville to play The Cannery Ballroom on April 6th along with upstart band WATERS.  Thanks to the fine folks down in Chattanooga that run The South Rail for the hat tip on that one.

You may remember us talking about Delta Spirit as part of that “parking lot” show last August with Surfer Blood, The Rosebuds, and others.  Well, they’ve been invited back to play (inside this time) Cannery Ballroom.  Check out the link above for more information about Delta Spirit, and you can have a listen to even more of their music over at their bandcamp page.

The opener for this one will be WATERS.  WATERS is the new band of Van Pierszalowski (of former band Port O’Brien), and they have been getting a lot of buzz surrounding the release of their debut LP Out In The Light.  The first single off of that album “For The One” has been getting a lot of play on alternative radio, and you can check that out below.

You can get more information on the Cannery Ballroom show here.  Things get started around 9pm, and you can grab your $15 ticket here.  Get out and see some live music.

Free Concert, Delta Spirit, The Rosebuds, Surfer Blood, and More….

Tomorrow night in Nashville….

How about a free concert just because you are such great music fans?  Did you get tickets to Nashville Cream’s birthday celebration at Third Man Records on Saturday?  You could also go see Nashville’s, The Clutters at The 5 Spot in East Nashville…  Or you could RSVP for some free tickets to see Delta Spirit, The Rosebuds (newly added), Surfer Blood, Turbo Fruits, The Wild Feathers, & Kingston Springs.

Delta Spirit is an indie rock band out of Long Beach, California.  They have a very melodic sound that is created with a number of unique instruments and sounds.  They experiment with unusual sounds such as trash can lids and orchestral bass drums.  They are also very talented multi-instrumental musicians.  They have been releasing records since their first EP I Think I’ve Found It in 2006.  They have since released two LPs Ode To Sunshine (2008) & History From Below (2010) and another EP Waits Room (2010).  Somehow, I always miss this band when they are playing in whatever city I am in, and I am sad to miss this show too since I’ll still be in San Francisco.  Spend some time with their extensive Daytrotter catalogue.

The Rosebuds are coming off of a string of dates as the opening act for Bon Iver.  Did you see them perform at The Ryman back in July?  It was pretty awesome.  They are a late (and very awesome) addition to the lineup for this free concert.  The indie folk/rock duo (and former husband and wife) have seven LP’s and a few EP’s and split 7′s…. and a great Daytrotter session.  This is really exciting news to an already exciting night.

Surfer Blood is an indie rock band out of  West Palm Beach, Florida.  They are a relatively new band on the scene, but have instantly rocketed up the indie scene conscious.  Their single “Swim” was released in 2009, and was named as Best New Music by Pitchfork.  They released their debut LP Astro Coast in January 2010 with continued critical acclaim.  A follow up EP Tarot Classics was released in 2011.  This up and coming buzz band is definitely worth checking out on Saturday night.  Daytrotter thought so when they brought them in for a pretty great session.

Nashville’s garage rock band Turbo Fruits are pretty common fixtures around Nashville.  The bluesy, smoky, garage rock sounds have filled the Nashville scene since the days of their (and JEFF The Brotherhood’s) previous band, Be Your Own Pet.  You know them, Daytrotter knows them, you’ve seen them, and it will be sure to get the crowd going before the night’s headliners.

Kingston Springs is a Nashville band that is fresh off of a Lollapalooza performance in July.  It’s a fuzzy rock pop sound that is pretty fresh.  They were also a showcased artist from the 2011 SXSW festival.  It’s an interesting sound that I haven’t spent too much time with, but it sounds like the sky’s the limit for them right now.  Giddy up!

Update, Update!!!!!  Since I wrote this, it was announced that Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem will be spinning records up at Mercy Lounge from Midnight until 2pm.  It just keeps getting more and more awesome!

I don’t know much about The Wild Feathers, and I can’t seem to find out much about them.  So, someone take a video on Saturday, and send me the link!

The festivities get started on Saturday at 6pm in the Mercy Lounge Parking Lot in Nashville.  You can RSVP for your free tickets here.  I’ve included a player with some tracks from Delta Spirit, The Rosebuds, Surfer Blood, Turbo Fruits, and Kingston Springs below.  Do you really have an excuse not to do this?
