This Weekend In Nashville, October 19-21

Hold onto your extra long hipster beanies Nashville, this is a pretty impressive weekend of shows (especially Friday night), so make some decisions and pace yourself.  Let’s jump right into it, shall we.

Friday

First off, for those you working that downtown job… or for the gainfully unemployed, you’ll want to check out the SoBro Fest going on down at 200 South 2nd.  This thing runs from 3 until 6, and admission is free.  You’ll get to enjoy the fine weather, while enjoying the fine sounds of the Allen Thompson Band, Kim Logan, and Blackfoot Gypsies.  You can check out more about the festival here, including a link to RSVP for free tickets.  We’ll rehash that new video from Kim Logan below, because it is so damn good.

Andrew has something coming up about Docktoberfest, but it gets started at 7pm over at Jackalope Brewery.  I went last week, and it is a great way to start your weekend off right.  Especially rolling straight out of SoBro.  Man, you kids better pace yourselves.

For those of you that want to get “freeky”, you’re next stop will be Marathon Music Works for Die Antwoord with Five Knives that gets started around 8pm.  You can check out one of the tracks, “I Fink U Freeky,” that got this whole phenomena started.  Things get started around 8pm, and you can snag those tickets here.

If you are still at Jackalope, you can just wander up the street to the north to check out either Dirty Guv’nahs w/ Shovels & Rope at Cannery or Milktooth EP release w/ Grass Root Kids and Charlie Hardin at The High Watt stage.  The Guv’nahs as you probably know hit that Paste list earlier this year, but we already knew about them.  Shovels & Rope are that South Carolina duo that just had their song “Hail, Hail” on everyone’s favorite show to talk about around these parts, ABC’s Nashville last night.  You can check out a video of them performing “Hail, Hail” below.  If that doesn’t do it for you, head upstairs for Milktooth, Grass Roots Kids, and Charlie Hardin.  We’ve already talked quite a bit about Milktooth, and you can click on that link back there to listen to their newest EP.  You can check out the new track “Some Words” from the new Grass Root Kids EP down there too.

Both shows get started around the 9ish hour, and you can snag tickets here.

If you happen to be heading south out of Jackalope, you should consider having a night cap at The Basement for The Danberrys and Underhill Rose for some pluckin’ and twangin’.  You can have a listen to The Danberry’s performing “Company Store” down below.  Things get started at 9pm, and tickets are $5 at the door.

If you are heading west, then you should stop for your nightcap at The Stone Fox for another pretty killer lineup of music with Fly Golden Eagle, James Wallace & The Naked Light, & Meadownoise.  I’m a big fan of all these artists, and this is definitely a draw for me.  You should check out the Meadownoise spread from the most recent issue of Native Magazine.  You can have a listen to the Fly Golden Eagle track “Need Some Money” below.  If you don’t know James Wallace and the Naked Light, check out their stuff over at Bandcamp.  Things get started at 9pm, and you can snag tickets here.

Saturday

If you missed Shovels & Rope on Friday night at Cannery, you can swing by Grimeys at 4pm for some free in-store action.  See above for their video of “Hail Hail”

The biggest secret, not secret show is the benefit concert that Alabama Shakes are putting on over at The 5 Spot with The Blackfoot Gypsies, Patrick Sweeney, and Frances & The Foundation.  You can read Adam Gold’s full write up on that one over at Nashville Cream, and, if you don’t have tickets, the next best bet might be on the deck at Red Door where you might catch a few licks coming out the open front door, because I think this puppy is well beyond sold out.

If you need to actually SEE some music, then I’d say you head down to Exit/In for Forget Cassettes: “O CURSA I” RELEASE SHOW w/ By Lightning & Poly.  You can get a warmup listen to the first of a trilogy of EPs that will release monthly below.  That one gets started around 8pm, and you can snag those tickets here.

I could continue, but let’s face it… no one is reading anymore.  Get some rest on Sunday.

This Weekend In Nashville, July 12-14

We have already talked about the difficult early decision that you have to face with Fiona Apple and Zappa Plays Zappa tonight, so let’s get into the rest of your music filled weekend.  Seriously, pace yourselves folks… this weekend rolls through Monday like a freight train.

Friday

Regardless of your early decisions for Friday night, you can still sneak over to catch the end of Jukebox The Ghost with Savoir Adore & Now, Now which is a solid bill at The High Watt.  If you chose those above mentioned early options, you will probably miss Now, Now who are damn good.  But, don’t despair, Brooklyn “fantasy rockers” Savoir Adore and Jukebox The Ghost are the headliners of this thing for a reason.  You can read a pretty funny write up of the newest Jukebox LP Safe Travels here.

If you are sick of Cannery Row, you could head down 8th Avenue to catch the periodic RR party by D. Striker (every Friday the 13th) at The Basement.  Since 1998, RR is a ‘zine dedicated to amusing its readers with Striker’s own Nashville pop-centric commentary and song lyrics. If you’re looking for a more esoteric take on Music City, this might be the spot for you. Guests include Dirt Heavy & Leroy Powell and the Stone Jack Ballers (below).

Saturday

Fruit Bats, Get Better, and Colorfeels are taking over 12th & Porter for what is sure to be a good time.  We should all know Colorfeels by now, and I am honestly still a bit surprised they didn’t end up at Bonnaroo after their Road To Bonnaroo performance last spring.  They kicked ass.  So, let’s get into Fruit Bats.  I really became a fan of Fruit Bats with their 2009 release The Ruminant Band, and honestly, I just stumbled across their 2011 record Tripper again, and it was a nice sigh of relief.  Maybe it’s a perfect soundtrack as I write this with a cold beer after an 18 hour day, or maybe it’s just damn good.

Calling all responsible Inglewood residents, there is a little ditty known as ArtHouse Nashville going on in your hood, and there is some pretty damn good stuff happening off Cooper Lane on Saturday night.  The musical acts are mostly new to me.  I highly recommend The Golden Sounds and I have heard a bit of Carolina Story… but, Kory Wheeler, Spoken Nerd, & Children Of Spy are going to be all new to me.  Shit, I hope it isn’t Kory Wheeler’s house, and I am inviting everyone over when I just admitted that I don’t know him.

If you are a fan of popsters that are teetering the line of indie and mainstream (see Foster The People here), then you can catch the next got-us-a-tv-commercial, song-of-summer band, Neon Trees over at Cannery Ballroom.  If you don’t know what I am talking about, click here for a listen.

Sunday

I have seriously been talking about this return of Wye Oak to Nashville for months now.  I guess technically Jenn Wasner was in town a couple of months ago with her side project Flock Of Dimes opening for Sharon Van Etten, but the last time that Wye Oak was in town was a magical night at The Basement last year.   You can’t go wrong with this one, so make all the choices you need to above, and make sure you have energy for this one.  Opening up are Nashville superstars By Lightning! and one of my finds of this year James Wallace & The Naked Light.  I’ve thrown up players for all of them if you “continue reading”.  So, get after it.

I told you not to blow your whole load this weekend, didn’t I?  Well, if you forgot, Passion Pit, Future Islands, & Kishi Bashi are playing on Monday night at Marathon Music Works, and, if you are a fan of music, you must get out for that show of all potential headliners.

Get out and see some live music this weekend.

Weekend Roundup… check out these shows.

Do you remember us telling you all about Katie Herzig during that little ticket giveaway thingee we did a few months ago?  Well, we aren’t giving any tickets away for this one, but you can catch her again Friday.  It’s a great opportunity to see this Nashville popstress live in the intimate confines of 3rd & Lindsley.  You can also check out Aaron Espe & the interestingly charming Waterdeep.  Things kick off around 7pm, and it’ll cost 10 bucks.

Saturday you will have to make a choice, or maybe the choice will make itself.  Gaining popularity by the minute Kansas Bible Company will be playing down in the ‘Boro at the Wall Street Bar w/ The Hardin Draw & Swamp Donkey (when you google that try not to get distracted by the Urban Dictionary definition).  That gets started around 9pm.

If you are looking to keep your Saturday night in Davidson County, then you should head over to see the winners of the first Road To Bonnaroo competition, By Lightning! (that’s the name of the band, not a random exclamation).  They are playing at The Basement with Wax Fang and Polly, and things get started around 9pm for $7.

Get out and see some live music this weekend!

By Lightning! wins the first Road to Bonnaroo competition!

It was a pretty spectacular night with a lot of turnout for the 1st Road to Bonnaroo competition last night at Mercy Lounge.  Eight rapid fire sets with performers giving it their all to earn a coveted spot in this year’s Bonnaroo lineup.  We saw very inspired performances from all the contestants, but it was clear that either Colorfeels or By Lightning! were going to be heading down to the farm this summer.  I’m sure the vote must have been close, but By Lightning! are your winners!  It’s been quite a year for this new band of Nashville musicians, and their rise continues with this win.  As a thank you, they are giving you a stream of their new record Left Hand, Right Hand below.

We here at No Country want to congratulate By Lightning! and all the other contestants.  Don’t snooze on the next round which takes place on March 26th.  Of course, you don’t have to fret, I will remind you!

The “Road To Bonnaroo” Begins Tonight at Mercy Lounge

You may (or may not) have noticed that the posts have been scarce for the past week or so.  That’s because I was rumbling along in a truck across the country to officially settle into Nashville.  So, it’s fitting that we start things back up here with a reminder about the road to Bonnaroo which begins tonight at Mercy Lounge.  Now that we know about the epic lineup, we get to help Bonnaroo fill out the bottom of the card with some great regional acts.  This is the first in a series of several events, and we will work hard to keep you in the loop about all the bands vying for the coveted spot.  I’ve thrown up a few videos from each of the bands performing tonight.

The set times will be approximately 9:15–9:30, 9:40–9:55, 10:05–10:20, 10:30–10:45, 10:55–11:10, 11:20–11:35, 11:45–12:00, 12:10–12:25.  The artists playing each slot are determined by a random drawing before the night begins.  Best of all… IT’S FREE!  So, get out and see some live music!
