Returning to Nashville for their third headlining show in just as many years, this time in support of their highly-anticipated recent sophomore LP The Darker the Weather // The Better the Man, Austin electro pop rock duo MISSIO are set to once again headline The Basement East on May 7, along with two fellow need-to-know Austin duos on the rise: sharp and eclectic hip hop newcomers Blackillac and synthy indie pop act Swells. Tickets to this stacked lineup are still available right here, and we’d suggest snagging them quick, as they’re not likely to last. However, we’re excited to announce that we’re also giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky fan– read on for more about the show, enter for a chance to win below!
Hailing from Austin, Texas, the ascent of electro pop rock breakout duo MISSIO has been a swift and deserved one. Formed in 2014, initially as a side project for singer and producer Matthew Brue, the band soon grew to include producer and multi-instrumentalist David Butler- both of whom were just coming off of other bands and, after casually crossing paths in the local scene over the years, found that they particularly clicked in the studio, even fortuitously becoming roommates as MISSIO’s lineup cemented. Adopting a strong DIY ethos (Butler built a home studio by hand, facilitating endless creative freedom), the duo were met with surprisingly fast online buzz after the release of their self-titled debut EP, and, after making their debut at SXSW and beginning to tour, were scooped up by RCA, who released their first full-length, Loner, in 2017. With radio and blog attention and some prominent placements, and propelled by buzzworthy tracks like “Middle Finger,” “Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea,” and “Everybody Gets High,” the group’s hook-laden, synth-laced, unabashedly poppy, and refreshingly earnest sound has made them an exciting act to watch, earning critical praise and hitting the road for the better part of the last couple of years to increasingly larger crowds. For their recent, highly-anticipated sophomore effort, The Darker the Weather // The Better the Man, the group disconnected to a remote studio in El Paso, building on the template set forth by their debut, while exploring more raw and personal thematic territory, and more lush, dense, analog synth tones. Even if you’ve caught the duo at any of their number of headlining or supporting shows the past couple of years, their return to Music City boasts a whole new arsenal of stellar, fresh material, making it a better time than ever to catch MISSIO in action!
Also from Austin, hip hop duo Blackillac is made up of lifelong friends Zeale and Phranchyze, who, despite years of collaborations and parallel career ambitions, only recently came together to form a group. The unlikely catalyst? None other than famed blues rocker Gary Clark Jr, a friend of the pair since their high school days, who invited them out after a show to hear some beats he’d been working on as a producer. Combining their sharp, old school flow meets contemporary cadence with Clark’s crisp and eclectic production (as well as occasional vocal hooks), Blackillac made their live debut with a series of shows early last year, at the time quickly nabbing headlines with Gary joining them as a pseudo third member (though he helmed their yet-t0-be-released EP, and remains tight with the pair, Clark doesn’t perform with the group on the regular for obvious scheduling reasons). Since then, Blackillac have released a series of buzzworthy singles, earning praise for their delivery, technical chops, sense of humor, and refined hip hop cred, all of which makes them a totally distinct act from MISSIO, but a complimentary one for fans of unique rising musicians who are hard to put into a box. As far as we can tell, it’s their first time in Nashville, so you definitely don’t want to miss out!
Another Austin based duo, who, also, are relatively new to the scene, Swells is comprised of Taylor Baker and Drew Walker, whose hypnotic indie, electro pop sound layers dreamy vocals with intricate guitar and synth work, for a style reminiscent of acts like Phantogram and Sylvan Esso. A couple years of singles and EPs have already helped the duo rack up buzz, landing them spots at the likes of Austin City Limits and SXSW, and with a forthcoming full-length helmed by Dwight Baker (of The Wind and the Wave, and a collaborator of MISSIO’s), we have no doubt you’ll be hearing a lot more from this band in the near future. Don’t be late!
