CAPPA‘s highly-anticipated sophomore EP, Queen of Hearts, is right around the corner, and, ahead of its Sept. 16 release, we’ve just about had a chance to hear every track. There’s fan favorite electro-pop jam “Other Girls,” soaring anthem of independence “I’m Good,” hypnotic banger “Mad About U,” and, if you pre-order the EP on iTunes, you’ll also get an exclusive download of moody jam “Nirvana.” Ahead of her performance tonight at Exit/In supporting Matt Wertz, the kickoff for her first U.S. tour, the buzzy local indie pop songstress has unveiled yet another track from Queen of Hearts, opener “Next Ex,” (h/t The 405) and it just might be our favorite of all!
Driving and confident, “Next Ex” is quintessential CAPPA, expertly handling the task of serving as both a strong album opener, a reintroduction for her refined new chapter, and definitive portrait for new listeners of an exciting artist on the rise. Overtop layered, thumping, contemporary synth flourishes with retro flair, and with expert dynamic control, CAPPA sings lines like “You’re gonna be my next ex boyfriend, yeah we can fall in love for a week or two, just me and you” in a way that feels all at once intrigued but worn out by the superficiality of short-term flings. We’ve said in the past that CAPPA sounds like if Taylor Swift wrote a song for the Drive soundtrack, and that comparison feels especially applicable here, as the talented singer showcases what she does best: packing a lot of emotional depth into an unbelievably catchy pop song, juxtaposed with punchy, sexy, and textured production.
Though the weather hasn’t yet received the memo, summer is all but over, and CAPPA has gifted us one last huge summer jam. Hear “Next Ex” below, grab tickets to tonight’s Exit/In show, and check out a full list of tour dates below!
